Newcastle United’s summer transfer window could finally see a breakthrough. Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey has reportedly identified St James’ Park as his preferred destination. The 24-year-old is currently valued between £40m and £50m.

He has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including West Ham United and Nottingham Forest. However, multiple reports, including The Athletic have claimed that Newcastle’s project and the opportunity to work under Eddie Howe is holding the greatest appeal for Ramsey.

Howe’s Admiration and Newcastle’s Transfer Frustrations

Eddie Howe’s admiration for Ramsey is no secret. Reportedly, the Newcastle boss is a ‘big fan’. The Magpies previously saw an approach for the former England youth international rejected in January 2024. Reportedly, Pep Guardiola has also been impressed with the midfielder.

He once considered bringing Ramsey to Manchester City. Now, Newcastle’s pursuit of Ramsey comes amid a challenging transfer period. The club has missed out on key targets such as Joao Pedro, who joined Chelsea, and Bryan Mbeumo, who opted for Manchester United.

Now with Alexander Isak’s future uncertain as he pushes for a move to Liverpool, strengthening the squad remains a priority for Newcastle. Speaking about Isak’s situation, Howe recently said, “I think everything is in play. I want the best and the strongest squad possible, but I also want players that really want to play for this football club.”

Jacob Ramsey Ready For the Next Step

Ramsey, a product of Villa’s academy, has made 169 first-team appearances. He scored 17 goals since his debut in 2019. Last season, he featured in 29 Premier League matches, contributing one goal and three assists. He has also played in 10 Champions League games for the club.

There, he registered one goal and two assists. Aston Villa is now competing in the Europa League next season. Meanwhile, Newcastle qualified for the Champions League, so the lure of Europe’s top competition could be decisive. Ramsey is reportedly keen to take on a new challenge.

Reportedly, he believes that the Magpies offer him the perfect platform to continue his development. Talks between Newcastle and Aston Villa are understood to be underway. While nothing is confirmed, the Magpies appear well-placed to secure a player who could add quality and versatility to their attacking options.
