Former Croatia star and Hajduk Split midfielder Ivan Rakitic has recently responded to widespread speculation surrounding his potential retirement. The rumours started after an emotional appearance in his side’s 2-1 win over Rijeka on Sunday. The 37-year-old was visibly moved as he was substituted in the 89th minute.

They are speculating that his last professional match will be Hajduk’s last match of the season against Sibenik on May 25. However, the veteran playmaker took to Instagram to clarify his position. He posted a picture of himself holding his boots, with the following in caption:

“Thank you all for your messages. Emotions are part of football, but I have not made any decisions or official announcements yet. There is still work to be done before I hang up my boots.”

A Career Etched in Glory for Ivan Rakitic

Rakitic’s incredible professional journey spans nearly two decades. He began his career at FC Basel before his rise with Schalke 04 and Sevilla. However, the jewel to the crown that was his career, was his stint at Barcelona. He truly left his mark at the club.

He stepped away from international duty in 2019. However, with his contribution to the national team, he still remains a beloved figure in Croatian football. He returned to Croatia in 2024 after a spell with Saudi club Al-Shabab. He joined Hajduk Split in a move hailed as a homecoming.

Final Match or Farewell Tour?

There have been reports from several media outlets, who all but confirmed his retirement date. Even so, Rakitic insists that he has not made any final decisions yet. The midfielder’s statement has kept his fans guessing whether he is heading into their next match as his last or not.

Hajduk Split, currently sitting in third place in Croatia’s top league, will face Šibenik. Even though Rakitic hasn’t revealed anything yet, this match could truly be his last. Even so, one thing is certain: whenever Rakitic decides to walk away, he’ll do so as one of Croatia’s finest and favourites.
