Is Liam Lawson about to get replaced at the cursed Red Bull second seat?
Liam Lawson was the among the six rookie drivers of the 2025 season. He was arguably in one of the best teams with a lot of experience under his belt. Lawson has been performing consistently for Red Bull’s sister team as a replacement driver for the past two seasons. Liam Lawson was contesting directly with much more experienced Yuki Tsunoda. Red Bull’s decision to choose Lawson over Tsunoda for the 2025 season attracted a lot of heat. Lawson’s confidence at Red Bull was complimented by the superiors at Red Bull, who believed he would be the perfect partner for Verstappen.
The 2025 Formula 1 season started very badly for Liam Lawson. He has started the race from dead last for two races consequently. His teammate, Max Verstappen has been producing results for the team going out of his way. Verstappen is outperforming faster cars on the grid. In spite of the fact that Lawson is a rookie, he is still miles away from his fellow rookies. Liam Lawson has been unable to replicate even half the performance displayed by Max Verstappen. Although Red Bull has not given a statement about replacing Lawson officially, there are rumors in the paddock about his future in Formula 1. Red Bull’s has also added comments about Liam Lawson which might be predicting his future.
Max Verstappen has been carrying the burden of Red Bull’s performance and championship dreams. He has been dominating the Formula 1 paddock for three years consistently. Verstappen has faced the absence of a good partner at Red Bull for the past few years. Lawson’s predecessor, Sergio Perez was unable to provide enough input to Red Bull in order to improve their car. The effect of which is visible at Red Bull for the past two seasons. The 2025 season is repeating the same situation for Verstappen. He has to fight alone in the front row and is the only driver securing points for his team.

Verstapppen’s plight is sure enough to cause his frustration. He might not show it in the car but even Verstappen needs a reliable teammate. Liam Lawson and his poor performance in the second Red Bull seems to have triggered Verstappen. Max Verstappen spoke about Lawson’s performance in a recent interview,
“If you look at the difference between the two drivers at the other teams, they are all closer together. It also shows that our car is extremely tough. I think if you put Liam in the Racing Bulls car, he will go faster. I really think so.”
Even though the Dutchman has not directly hinted at Lawson’s removal, his remarks are sure to stir up some opinions at Red Bull.
Liam Lawson is feeling underconfident about his performance at Red Bull. He thinks that his performance is not good enough for the Red Bull. When Yuki Tsunoda was asked a question about a potential seat at Red Bull mid-season, he had an immediate and playful response-
“Japan? Yeah, 100%”
Tsunoda’s aspirations to join Red Bull paired with his performance compared to Lawson in the past few years, might end up being a death blow to Lawson’s seat at Red Bull. What are your opinions about Liam Lawson’s potential sacking from Red Bull?
nhl I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in NHL, Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
Read moreFor me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university’s Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
Message to Readers: I promise you one day you’ll see me managing operations on track with a Formula 1 team ; )
