Inter Milan Boss Discusses Tactics, Injuries, and Lamine Yamal Threat Before Crucial Second Leg.

A place in the Champions League 2024-25 final is on the line as Inter Milan welcome Barcelona for the decisive second leg. Inter manager Simone Inzaghi addressed the media on Monday ahead of their highly anticipated match against Barca at San Siro.

The two teams are heading into the decider after a thrilling 3-3 draw in the first leg in Spain. Nerazzurri led twice in that match and squandered it both times. The stakes are high in this clash but Inzaghi emphasized composure and belief. He also acknowledged the added pressure of home expectations, saying:

“We are up against a strong team… But I hope to see a great Inter against Barcelona. We know the importance of this game. It will take a huge performance. We need to be switched on and clearheaded. It’s almost a final and we get to play it in front of our fans.”

Injury Watch: Lautaro & Pavard Updates

Similar to Barcelona, Inter are also handling a number of key injuries. The availability of their star striker Lautaro Martínez and defender Benjamin Pavard remains uncertain. Both have been nursing injuries and Pavard has only returned to partial training. Inzaghi confirmed:

“Pavard did part of the session and the feelings were good. Lautaro has been out for a week, so we will see how he is… With Lautaro, it will all depend on how he feels.”

Talking about Martinez, the Inter boss admitted the dilemma of deploying him when he is only half fit. He said, “It will be difficult for a player to help us for 25 minutes if they’re not ready to start the match.”

Tactical Focus: Dealing with Yamal and Barcelona’s Attacking Threat

One of Inter’s biggest concerns is Barcelona’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal. Inzaghi already called the 17-year-old a generational player after Yamal delivered a stunning performance against them in the first half. Handling him this time around, Inzaghi said:

“He’s such a quick thinker… even before receiving the ball, he knows what move to make. It’s difficult to handle him, we will try to limit the ball getting to him.” Defender Alessandro Bastoni echoed his coach’s sentiments, in the press conference, saying, “In terms of age and that ability to create something, he’s one of the best, if not the very best.”

Despite Barcelona’s attacking prowess and possession-heavy style, Inzaghi remains confident: “We’ve shown our strength. We must be determined and ready.” The match is sure to be another thriller with both teams’ set on securing a spot in the final. The winner of the clash will earn a spot in the final in Munich either against PSG or Arsenal.
