Indonesia Parts Ways with Patrick Kluivert After Failing to Qualify for World Cup 2026

Patrick Kluivert’s tenure as Indonesia’s head coach has come to an abrupt end. The decision came after the team’s disappointing campaign at the 2025 AFC Asian Cup and their struggles in the World Cup qualifying rounds. The announcement of his release came on Tuesday.

The former Barcelona and Netherlands forward was relieved of his duties by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) just months after taking charge. Kluivert’s Indonesia managed only one win in six matches during their latest World Cup qualifiers.

This left them at the bottom of their group and effectively out of contention for the next round. His side also failed to progress beyond the group stage at the 2025 Asian Cup earlier this year. That occurred even after they showed promise under his early leadership. The PSSI released an official statement confirming the decision.

They thanked Kluivert for his contributions while acknowledging the need for change. The federation said, “We appreciate the dedication and professionalism shown by Patrick Kluivert during his time with the national team. However, the current results have not met our expectations.”

Patrick Kluivert: Short Stint and Future Prospects

Appointed in late 2024, Kluivert was seen as a high-profile appointment intended to elevate Indonesian football to a new level. His previous coaching experience included assistant roles with the Netherlands and managerial spells at clubs like Curacao and FC Twente. There was a lot of early optimism.

Even so, inconsistent performances and tactical criticism from local media led to increasing scrutiny. Speaking after his dismissal, Kluivert expressed disappointment but remained gracious. He told Reuters, “It has been an honour to coach Indonesia. I wish the players and the federation success in the future.”

PSSI Eyes Local Replacement

Reports suggest that the PSSI is considering appointing a local manager to rebuild the squad. They’re also looking to focus on developing young talent ahead of the 2026 Southeast Asian Games. Former Indonesia U-23 coach Shin Tae-yong is reportedly among the names being discussed.

He previously guided the team to the Asian Cup and if appointed, it would be a return to the role. Despite Kluivert’s exit, his brief stint has left a mark on Indonesia’s evolving football identity. He made an emphasis on tactical discipline and youth promotion. They’re foundations that his successor may yet build upon.
