Guardiola’s Men Seal Third Place in Premier League Table With a 2–0 Win Over Fulham.

Manchester City ended their Premier League campaign on a high note, clinching a 2-0 victory over Fulham on the road. With that win at the Craven Cottage, they sealed third place in the league table along with a coveted spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

City went into the final match needing just a single point to ensure their qualification. However, goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Erling Haaland ensured a comfortable win for them. The result also marked City’s 15th consecutive Champions League qualification.

Gundogan’s Spark, Haaland’s Finish

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute when Ilkay Gundogan scored a stunning overhead kick. This was his first league goal since he rejoined City last summer. Matheus Nunes powered down the right before delivering a cross that Bernd Leno palmed into Gundogan’s path.

The German midfielder didn’t hesitate and took a brilliant acrobatic finish that bounced off the bar and over the line. Thus, scoring the opener for City that needed confirming following a brief VAR check. City continued to dominate possession, but Fulham had their moments as well.

Ederson was called into action multiple times, notably saving two efforts from Harry Wilson. Fulham’s Tom Cairney also came close during his final appearance for the club. The second goal arrived in the 72nd minute after Gundogan was brought down by Sasa Lukic. Haaland scored the penalty, coolly slotting home his fourth penalty against Fulham.

Guardiola Hails Team’s Grit

Pep Guardiola was full of praise for his players’ following the game. Talking about their determination through a challenging season, Gulardiola said. “It’s like a title. If you don’t continue, you finish 10th, 11th, 12th. I’m very proud and pleased for the team.” City’s third-place finish came even though they finished 13 points behind champions Liverpool.

Guardiola admitted improvements are needed but emphasized the importance of consistency: “Finishing third is really nice. It’s not perfect, but we will be in Europe next season in the Champions League.” This was all in the midst of Kevin De Bruyne’s final league appearance for City.

He came off the bench late in the match to a rapturous ovation. Meanwhile, Jack Grealish was left out of the squad entirely. Guardiola insisted that it was “selection” and “nothing personal.” City now look ahead to the FIFA Club World Cup in June, where they will face Wydad AC in Philadelphia in the first match.
