Controversial VAR Call Ends Champions League Hopes for Aston Villa

Disallowed Morgan Rogers Goal and Defeat to Manchester United Deny Villa Top-Four Finish.

Aston Villa’s dream of Champions League football ended in heartbreak when they fell to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United on the final day of the Premier League season. It was a match defined by a highly contentious refereeing decision. The flashpoint came in the 55th minute when Morgan Rogers slotted home a goal.

It came after capitalizing on a loose ball from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Villa thought they had taken a crucial lead. However, referee Thomas Bramall whistled for a foul before the ball hit the net. The call was based on the belief that Bayindir had control of the ball. However, replays later showed otherwise.

Aston Villa can confirm the club has written to the PGMOL to raise concerns over the selection process of match officials following today’s game with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Since the whistle had gone before the ball crossed the line, the incident was ruled non-reviewable by VAR. Former referee Peter Walton disagreed with the decision, telling TNT Sports, “It was a goal and should have stood.” However, the Premier League’s Match Centre later explained:

“The referee’s call was a free kick to Manchester United with Bayindir deemed to be in control of the ball before Rogers gained possession. The whistle was blown by the referee before the ball entered the goal, therefore the incident was not reviewable by the VAR.”

Champions League Dreams Dashed

The disallowed goal proved pivotal. Moments later, Amad Diallo headed United in front before Christian Eriksen converted a late penalty to seal the result. Villa manager Unai Emery was visibly frustrated. He later sarcastically applauded the officiating after the penalty call.

After the match, Emery said, “We are very disappointed. That was a big mistake.” Adding to Villa’s frustration was the fact that Champions League qualification had been within reach. They ended the season level on points with Newcastle United.

However, they missed out on goal difference. They’ve now finished in sixth place, dropping into next season’s Europa League. Villa’s captain John McGinn criticized the appointment of an inexperienced referee for such a high-stakes encounter. This was a sentiment that also echoed across the fanbase.

The club has also lodged an official complaint seeking an explanation for the controversial officiating. Financial implications also loom large as losing the match has resulted in missing out on Champions League football. That can cost the club upwards of £100 million in potential revenue.
