Ilia Topuria’s coach speaks candidly about why they and the Topuria brothers had to go their separate ways!
Ilia Topuria has officially parted ways with the Climent brothers after a remarkable 13-year partnership. Jorge and Agustin Climent helped shape ‘El Matador’ from a promising 15-year-old into the featherweight sensation we see today.
The timing couldn’t be more surprising, coming just weeks before his massive UFC 317 title fight against Charles Oliveira. But unlike many dramatic coaching splits fans have seen before, this one has a much simpler explanation than anyone expected. Jorge Climent recently made it clear what happened.
The split between Topuria and his longtime coaches isn’t about money disputes or creative differences. It is actually about something much more practical: location. Jorge Climent, talking to Submission Radio recently confirmed the separation and revealed the real reason behind their decision to part ways.
“He [Ilia Topuria] go to live in Madrid and I have my own project here [in Alicante] with my brother. Ilia has his own gym in his house and he wants all the energy on him. You feel always this is not good for sentiment feeling but this is life. We go with him on the journey and now he grow and he want to fly away. We are very proud to go all the way with him, we are very proud for everything he do. I want everything in his life continue going good.”

Jorge Climent didn’t throw any shade or make dramatic statements. Instead, he wished Topuria nothing but good luck and hoped he would continue achieving success. That’s class right there. The Climent brothers understand that sometimes fighters need to make practical decisions for their careers, even if it means ending long relationships.
Fans who watched Topuria’s UFC 308 preparation videos already got a glimpse of his Madrid setup. The guy has built himself a serious training facility at his home. We are talking recovery rooms, cryotherapy chambers, grappling mats, and plenty of space for pad work. He has basically created his own mini-gym paradise.

Topuria has always been vocal about how important recovery is to his training process. He believes preventing injuries is way better than having to cure them later. His Madrid facility gives him everything he needs without the hassle of constant travel. That’s smart thinking from someone who’s about to face one of the most dangerous submission artists in the sport.
The timing might seem odd with UFC 317 around the corner, but Topuria had been working primarily out of Madrid for months anyway. According to Spanish journalist Alvaro Colmenero, Topuria’s core team had already shifted months ago. This wasn’t a sudden panic decision or some last-minute drama. The separation was more like making official what had already been happening naturally.
