Iga Swiatek’s Cincinnati Open 2025 Win Delivers 11th WTA 1000 Title, Just Behind Serena Williams’ Record

Iga Swiatek continued her remarkable resurgence on Monday, winning her first Cincinnati Open title by defeating No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4. The Polish star rallied from an early 0-3 deficit to seal victory in one hour and 49 minutes, becoming the first player from her country to lift the singles trophy in Cincinnati. The triumph marked her 11th career WTA 1000 title and 24th overall on the Hologic WTA Tour.

Iga Swiatek Adds Another Milestone to Her Career

At just 24, Swiatek is already stacking milestones. Her latest victory makes her only the second player since 2009 to reach double-digit (11) WTA 1000 trophies, trailing only Serena Williams (13). By surpassing Victoria Azarenka’s tally of 10, she has become a part of elite company. It was also her second title of 2025, just a month after winning Wimbledon, highlighting her return to form after a barren stretch in 2024.

Swiatek’s ranking reflects that comeback. Dropping as low as No. 8 earlier this year after a title-less season, she has surged back to world No. 2, overtaking Coco Gauff. Her Cincinnati run featured top-10 wins over Elena Rybakina and Paolini, marking her first multi-top-10victory week since Roland Garros 2024.

Statistically, Swiatek’s 52 victories over top-10 opponents in her first 75 attempts rank only behind Monica Seles (61) and Steffi Graf (53). She also owns the highest win rate against top-10 players in WTA-level finals since the Tier format’s introduction in 1990, standing at 88.2% (15–2) in such matches, excluding team events with a minimum of five finals. Cincinnati also exorcised past frustrations, as she had fallen in the semifinals of her previous two appearances at the event.

Reflecting on her win, Swiatek admitted even she was surprised by her progress on faster courts. “I don’t know why I win the tournaments that were like the last ones in terms of what I thought they were going to be,” she said during the trophy ceremony. “So, thank you [to my team] for forcing me to become a better player and learn how to play on all these faster surfaces. I’m kind of shocked and super happy.”
