Carlos Alcaraz Consoles Jannik Sinner After Retirement Ends Cincinnati Final Early

Alcaraz’s victory in Cincinnati was overshadowed by his heartfelt support for a struggling Sinner.

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz claimed the 2025 Cincinnati Open title on Monday after Jannik Sinner was forced to retire due to illness just five games into the final. The Spaniard led 5-0 when Sinner, visibly struggling in the heat and humidity, stopped play after only 23 minutes. While Alcaraz collected the trophy, the more memorable moment came when he put his arm around his rival to console him.

A Rivalry Marked by Respect & Sportsmanship

The match was billed as another high-stakes chapter in a growing rivalry, their fourth final of the season and 14th meeting overall. But from the opening game, Sinner looked unsettled, dropping his serve at love and calling the trainer during the first changeover. With temperatures at 31°C (87°F) and humidity at 57%, the Italian’s condition worsened until he was unable to continue. Clearly devastated, he left the court to warm applause, comforted by Alcaraz in a show of sportsmanship.

Alcaraz later admitted the victory felt hollow. “That wasn’t the way to win matches, to win the trophy,” he said. “I just have to say, I understand how you can feel right now. You are truly a champion. I’m pretty sure from this situation you are going to come back even stronger. That’s what true champions do.” He also left a message on the camera lens: “Sorry Jannik :(.”

Sinner, who had beaten Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final earlier this year, apologized to fans during the trophy ceremony. “I am super, super sorry to disappoint you,” he said. “From yesterday, I didn’t feel great. I thought that I would improve during the night, but it came up worse. I tried to make it at least a small match, but I couldn’t handle more.”

The fallout extended beyond Cincinnati. Sinner has since withdrawn from the US Open mixed doubles, where he was scheduled to team up with Katerina Siniakova against Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic. His decision raised questions about his fitness for the singles event, where he is the defending champion. But the Italian reassured fans that it was only “a couple of days’ rest” and confirmed he will compete in singles at Flushing Meadows.
