Carlos Alcaraz to Chase No.1 ATP Rankings through US Open as the Spaniard Closes Gap with World No. 1 Sinner

Five-time Grand Slam champion, Carlos Alcaraz is going through a remarkable campaign this year. The Spaniard recently won the Cincinnati Open title after beating Jannik Sinner in the final. The No. 1 in the ATP rankings was forced to retire through injury. Now, the whole attention moved to the US Open where Jannik Sinner is the defending champion.

How the Cincinnati Title Helped Alcaraz in Pursuit of No. 1 Rankings?

Carlos Alcaraz’s title glory in Cincinnati Masters helped him to close the gap with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. The battle for the No. 1 ATP Ranking heats up heading into the US Open. Ahead of the Cincinnati Open final, Sinner was leading Alcaraz by 2,250 points in the Live Rankings. Alcaraz’s Masters title reduced the gap to 1900 points.

When Sinner won the US Open last year, he earned 1,950 points more than Alcaraz in New York. The Spaniard suffered a second-round exit to Botic van de Zandschulp in the 2024 US Open. As per the ATP, once the 2024 US Open points in the Live Rankings will be removed, Alcaraz would be leading by 50 points.

The world #1 will be on the line at the US Open no matter what happens in the final in Cincinnati.

The battle for world No. 1 ATP player is heating up and Alcaraz could claim the top ranking by winning the US Open, regardless of how Sinner performs at the competition. Alcaraz can even return to No. 1 ranking if he reaches the semifinals at the season’s final major. The 22-year-old will become the top-ranked ATP player for the first time since September 2023.

The 2025 US Open draw will be announced on Thursday. Both Sinner and Alcaraz will be placed in the opposite halves of the draw at season’s fourth major. We can witness another final between these two. The duo have played four matches already this season and Alcaraz won three. Currently, Sinner has two Grand Slams this season and one goes to Alcaraz.
