Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has once again shut down new reports about his contract negotiations. However, the French center-back confirmed that a decision on his future is coming “very soon.” The 26-year-old is in the final months of the five-year deal he signed in 2021.
While French outlet L’Equipe reported that Liverpool had already made a new offer and were confident of keeping him, Konate insisted that is not the case. Speaking at France’s pre-match press conference in Baku ahead of their qualifier against Azerbaijan, the defender clarified the situation.
Konate didn’t play in the last match as France secured qualification with a win over Ukraine. But he’s expected to get a chance to start in Baku this time.
“I’ve seen a lot of things in the press recently, like Liverpool have made me a new offer. I don’t know where that’s coming from,” he said, via Foot Mercato. “My agents are still in discussions with Liverpool. I hope my decision will be made very soon so I can announce it.”

This isn’t the first time Konate has had to distance himself from rumours around his future. At the end of last season, he described reports that he had rejected a contract proposal as “completely fake,” adding that he had “not even asked for anything” from the club.
The ongoing uncertainty is unlikely to comfort Liverpool fans, especially as Konate has experienced a dip in form recently. However, the French defender is still viewed as a key starter for the Premier League champions. The club’s continued dialogue with his representatives suggests that an extension remains possible.

Konate’s comment about announcing his decision “very soon” could also hint at another factor. It could also indicate the defender’s ability to sign a pre-contract with an overseas club from January 1. Real Madrid, PSG, and Bayern Munich have all been linked with the France international.
