Arsenal Suffer Double Blow Ahead of Crucial Clashes as Key Defenders Injured on International Duty

Moumita Dutta

The impressive start to the season for Arsenal has been built on defensive stability and tactical discipline. However, the international break this November has delivered a setback that threatens to disrupt their momentum. Two key defenders Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori have returned from national-team duty.

They’re coming back to London with fresh injury concerns. This leaves Mikel Arteta with an uncomfortable wait ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. Neither injury has yet been publicly classified as long term, but the timing itself is damaging. Arsenal head back into domestic and European action soon.

They will not only be short on attacking options but also be increasingly stretched at the back. With Tottenham up first and heavyweights Bayern and Chelsea immediately afterward, Arteta may need to turn to Piero Hincapie, Cristhian Mosquera, or even teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly sooner than anticipated.

Concerns Grow Around Gabriel Magalhaes Injury

The bigger blow arrived from Brazil’s friendly at the Emirates Stadium. Gabriel was forced off in the second half after signalling discomfort. He tried to continue briefly but soon dropped on the ground, gesturing to the bench. Medical staff escorted him from the pitch. No immediate diagnosis was provided, but his reaction alone raised alarms at Arsenal.

Gabriel has been central to the club’s exceptional defensive record this season. He has contributed not just with tackles and interceptions but also with a commanding presence at set pieces. Losing him, especially in matches against Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Chelsea, would test the depth of Arteta’s back line in ways they have managed to avoid so far.

Riccardo Calafiori Withdrawal Adds to Arsenal Defensive Woes

Compounding the problem, Calafiori withdrew from Italy’s camp after attempting to return to full training ahead of Azzurri’s final World Cup qualifier. The defender was ruled out after reporting hip discomfort. Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso praised the 23-year-old’s effort, saying:

“He tried, and we thank him for the professionalism, desire, and dedication he’s shown.” Italy opted against risking him. Gattuso later added that pushing him through pain “was not fair because he’ll have matches every three or four days.” For Arsenal, understandably, his absence comes at an inconvenient time.

Arteta has been using Calafiori in a flexible defensive role. It allowed him to drift into midfield and advance into the final third. His form and tactical versatility have made him a valuable piece of the system. Especially as Arsenal are also managing a lengthy injury list elsewhere in the squad.
