Formula 1 Points System for the 2025 Sprint Weekends

Sprint race will return to action sooner than expected in 2025. The 2025 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix is going to be the first sprint race of the year. The sprint race is known for delivering action to drivers on both Saturday and Sunday, compared to the conventional racing format. Formula 1’s sprint weekend has been a matter of discussion during recent years. The Formula 1 sprint race system is known to help the drivers gain extra points during the championship. This leads to much closer championship battles and team strategies.

The Sprint weekend format has gone through many changes over the years. In the current format, there are separate qualifying sessions for both- sprint and main races. The sprint weekend requires teams to use the same car throughout the entire weekend and any changes may lead to driver penalties. The sprint weekend also helped Max Verstappen to create a dominating and incredible record in the 2023 Formula 1 season. Verstappen became the only second driver to win the Formula 1 championship on a Saturday.

Sprint Race Points System

The Formula 1 sprint race held on Saturdays is known to be a short version of the main race. It is hosted for one hour as per the official Formula 1 schedule. In the current points system, Formula 1 only awards the top-8 drivers of the race. The maximum points that can be earned by a driver is 8 points for winning the race. The subsequent drivers are awarded one point less until the eighth driver gets 1 point. So, the points can be tabulated as-

  4. 5 points
  5. 4 points
  6. 3 points
  7. 2 points
  8. 1 point
