Formula 1 is back this weekend to one of its most awaited venues. The British Grand Prix is among the most popular races of the Formula 1 calendar. The race has been in Formula 1 since the inception of the world championships. The British GP weekend is greeted by a horde of fans cheering on for their home favourites. Lewis Hamilton is the king of the circuit with nine wins.

British Grand Prix is a race of historical significance. It is going to stay on the Formula 1 calendar until 2034 according to its current contract. However, the most important fact stems around the fact that the race has been organised every year since 1950. British Grand Prix was the very first race held during the first season of Formula 1 racing in 1950. Let’s go ahead and explore this exciting race.

British Grand Prix History

The Formula 1 British Grand Prix is going to take place in 2025 from July 4-6 at Silverstone, UK. Lewis Hamilton, the home hero, is the defending race winner. Silverstone was the very first track to host the British Grand Prix in 1950. The race was then won by Giuseppe “Nino” Farina for Alfa Romeo. The next year, Scuderia Ferrari claimed their very first F1 victory in the British Grand Prix with José Froilán González.

The British Grand Prix has made full use of the racetracks available in the UK. For five years from 1995-1960 Silverstone and Aintree used to host the race alternatively. From 1963, Brands Hatch was introduced to Formula 1 as the host of the British Grand Prix. Brands Hatch enjoyed the race every alternate year with Silverstone until 1987. Since 1987, Silverstone has been the only track to host the British Grand Prix in Formula 1. Stirling Moss is the first British driver to win the race in 1955 at the Aintree circuit for Mercedes.

British Grand Prix Circuit

As of 2025, Silverstone Circuit hosts the British Grand Prix every year. It is a 5.891 kms long track with 18 corners. There are some famous sections of the track known for its high octane racing sequences. The Hamilton straight which is the first DRS zone of the race involves a long run to turn-1 at Abbey where drivers often clash for track position.

The Wellington straight is yet another DRS rich zone which leads way to turns 8 and 9. Turn 9 in particular is an aggressive right hander known as the Copse corner. The drivers take extra care to balance their speed as their navigate the fast section of turn-9. The Silverstone circuit is defined as track which flows. The fast and smooth nature of the circuit makes it a driver and fan favorite. According to Lewis Hamilton, a lap around the Silverstone circuit is almost similar to flying a fighter jet. It is the four-time champion Max Verstappen who holds the lap record around Silverstone with a lap time of 1:27.097 he set in 2020.

The 2025 British Grand Prix is gearing up to an exciting race already. McLarens have been fast during practice. Although, the pace Ferrari have been carrying is a welcome surprise. The odds of Lewis Hamilton claiming a podium during the race will increase drastically if he brings in good qualifying performance today.
