Giants GM Joe Schoen’s “Open to All” Pre-Draft Interview Hints at Key Intentions for the 2025 NFL Draft

The 2025 NFL draft is officially just a week away, and all preparations are in full swing as teams start putting their draft plans ready for the big event. With each passing day, the excitement and the tension increase among both the players and the fans alike.

This is the time when general managers of NFL teams make their money. It is ultimately one of the most important aspects of their jobs. Getting the draft right can flip the destiny of teams just like that, and in turn can have either positive or negative results over the course of the season. Some rookies take the league by storm, while others take their time to develop. Identifying and making the correct moves in the draft is, therefore, of paramount importance for all GMs.

And that brings us to the New York Giants pre-draft press conference that occurred yesterday. General Manager Joe Schoen looked rather calm and pleased with how things are developing, while alluding to the fact that they have a process in place that they believe in. Some of the key takeaways are as follows.

Giants Trading Down is on the Cards

During the press conference, one reporter asked Schoen whether the Giants have considered trading up or down during the draft and whether or not they have received any offers from teams looking to trade up. Currently, the Giants possess the number 3 overall pick, a quite lucrative spot to land a big name from this draft. Schoen was brief with his response, stating that the Giants are open to all options and that they have received calls from teams.

Drafting a QB Is Not Mandatory

Another important question posed by the media was pertaining to the Giants’ plans for drafting a quarterback, given that the team has already signed a couple of veterans in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. Schoen seemed pretty content with the Giants’ current QB room as he also expressed that they have Tommy DeVito, also, who is still developing but has helped them win games along with their two new signings.

“With the signing of those two players, I think we put ourselves in a position where I don’t think it’s mandatory or something with our feet to the fire, that we have to do. I think the two guys we signed have played a lot of ball. I do think we’ve upgraded that room compared to where it was a year ago. I like the two guys that we have, and Tommy’s still in there, and he’s won games for us, too, and he’s still developing. We’re happy with the makeup of the room right now.”

Open to Letting Travis Hunter Play Both Sides of the Ball

Schoen was also quizzed on the Travis Hunter situation, as the player has been adamant that he wants to play both offense and defense in the NFL. The Giants’ GM was happy with their receiver and defensive back rooms and thus is open to letting Hunter play both sides.

Hunter has been quite vocal over the past few weeks regarding his intentions of playing each and every snap in a game. While that shows his passion for the game, many teams are skeptical since it would involve taking a toll on his body as well as the complications of learning two playbooks at the same time.

“We’re in a unique position that we have three good receivers and we like our secondary right now. So our situation will be unique. I would not be afraid to play him on both sides of the ball.”

The Giants currently have a total of 8 picks at their disposal, with four in the first three rounds. Overall, New York is keeping all their options open and will take it step by step depending upon how the draft pans out.
