Derek Carr’s 2025 Season in Doubt as Saints QB Faces Injury Concerns

Derek Carr is the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints’ who is know for his strong-arm and has thrown for 41245 passing yards in his career. Carr started his NFL career with the Las Vegas Raider (previously known as the Oakland Raiders) and spent 9 seasons with the team. He had, arguably, his best season in 2016 where he threw for 3937 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, on only 6 interceptions and was only sacked 16 times. Carr finished third in the MVP voting that season, and led them to a 12-3 record. However, Carr broke a bone in his right leg, which ended the Raiders’ hopes of a Super Bowl trophy.

Since then, Carr has never been able to achieve the same kind of success that he had in 2016, and the only time the Raiders won double digit games after 2016 was in 2021, where Carr led the team to a playoff appearance but was immediately knocked out by the 2021 AFC champions, the Cincinnati Bengals. Carr has been on the decline as of late and the latest injury concerns that he has, does not help the New Orleans Saints in any way.

Carr’s Shoulder Injury Clouds Saints’ Quarterback Plans for 2025

Derek Carr’s future with the New Orleans Saints for the 2025 season is uncertain due to a shoulder injury that may require surgery, according to various sources. The injury adds to a challenging 2024 season where the 11-year veteran missed 7 games due to a fracture on non-throwing hand and an oblique injury.

Injuries have been a concern for Carr and the Saints for the past year, and even when Carr is on the field, the Saints were 5-5. He threw for 2145 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and a pass completion rate of 67.7 percent, while the team finished with a overall record of 4-13 overall.

Saints Face Tough Choices with Carr’s Contract and Backup Struggles

Derek Carr signed a 4-year $150 million deal with the Saints in 2023, which includes $60 million guaranteed. Carr still has two years remaining in his contract and his 2025 cap hit is $20.4 million, which will raise to $69.2 million in 2026, with voids years 2027-2029.

Backup quarterbacks for the Saints, Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler, struggled last season, going 0-7 combined in 2024. However, the Saints do hold the 9th pick and top-100 selection in the 2025 NFL draft, which means that the Saints could try to draft a QB once again this time, as the team is known for drafting QBs. The Saints are in a tough spot currently as they have critical decisions to make regarding Carr’s health and their quarterback future.
