George Russell doubles down on staying with Mercedes
George Russell recently claimed his first victory of the season. The Briton drove Mercedes to a double podium finish in Canada. Since then, the lack of a contract with Mercedes has become a huge deal for the paddock. There are numerous speculations flying around regarding George Russell and Max Verstappen. Mercedes is the epicentre of these rumours for the past few months.
The Silver Arrows do not have drivers for the upcoming season. As such, people are wondering if they are trying to pursue Max Verstappen and poach him from Red Bull Racing. There were even reports about Max Verstappen agreeing to leave Red Bull after talks with Toto Wolff. The entire scenario has become rather intense with the British Grand Prix weekend. George Russell has kept his cool throughout the ordeal. Once again, he had a quick witted reply to the media about his contract.
There are a lot of different statements regarding the current situation at Mercedes. The team is providing hardly any clarity about their driver choices for the upcoming season. Sometimes Toto Wolff is seen backing George Russell as the favourite contender. However, the rumours claim that he is trying to get Max Verstappen to sign a contract.
It is quite evident that despite his talents, Russell is the obvious driver at risk in Mercedes. George Russell may end up without a contract if Max Verstappen agrees to join Mercedes. The Briton is a race winning driver. He is also among the best drivers this season. And he believes that his results are enough to keep him in the team.

“The fact is Toto has never let me down – he’s always given me his word but he’s also got to do what’s right for his team, which includes me but it also includes thousands of people who work for Mercedes. For me it’s nothing to worry about because I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere, and whoever my team mate will be, it doesn’t concern me either. I’m just focused on the driving.”
Russell is also confident that he would not be left without a seat for the upcoming season. While focusing on keeping his loyalty towards Mercedes, Russell explains that his performance is going to help secure a seat for the upcoming season. He also says there are other teams who reached to him regarding a contract. But, he chose to put his faith in Mercedes hoping that the Silver Arrows wont let him down.
nhl I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in NHL, Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
Read moreFor me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university’s Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
Message to Readers: I promise you one day you’ll see me managing operations on track with a Formula 1 team ; )
