Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement with Frenkie de Jong over a new contract extension. The new contract will tie the Dutch midfielder to the club until June 2029. The official signing ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 15.
He will put the pen on paper at the club offices, in the presence of president Joan Laporta. The new deal is set to be one of the most important renewals of the season. It will include a €500 million release clause. It is a significant rise from his previous €400 million clause.

It shows how De Jong has become Barcelona’s one of the most untouchable assets alongside young stars like Pedri and Lamine Yamal. Sporting director Deco, who played a central role in finalizing the agreement, described De Jong as ‘a key player for the project’.
He emphasized that the midfielder is an integral to Hansi Flick’s plans going forward. According to Mundo Deportivo, De Jong will retain his current salary until 2026. That is, until the club’s new wage structure takes effect from July 1, 2026.
This extension marks a significant turnaround for De Jong. His future had been uncertain amid Barcelona’s financial challenges and reported interest from Manchester United for some time. Back in 2024, the club had even considered selling him to ease wage pressures.
However, the Dutchman stood firm, expressing his wish to stay. Speaking earlier this year, De Jong said: “I hope to stay at Barcelona until the end of my career. This is the place I wanted to be as a child.” His loyalty, combined with consistently strong performances, has made him indispensable in Flick’s midfield.

Since joining from Ajax back in 2019, De Jong has made over 260 appearances for Barcelona. He helped Barcelona win two La Liga titles and six major trophies. His control, composure, and vision have anchored the team’s style. Especially as Flick transitions the squad amid multiple injuries.
With De Jong’s renewal now sealed, Barcelona can focus on stabilizing their season on the pitch. They will return to action this weekend against Girona, where De Jong is expected to play a central role once again in Flick’s engine room. Especially with several key players missing with injuries.
