Former Chiefs Safety Tyrann Mathieu Sounds Off a Warning to the League – Expects Kansas City To ‘Play With an Edge’

Former NFL safety Tyrann Mathieu, who just announced his retirement a few days back, still remains well connected with what is happening not only with the Saints, but also with his previous team, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mathieu, who played in the league for twelve years, spent three of those seasons playing in Kansas City, where he also won his first and only Super Bowl ring in the 2019 season.

The newly retired safety spoke to Kay Adams on a variety of topics, including his former team and how they would be dealing with the Super Bowl LIX loss ahead of the upcoming season.

Mathieu’s Honest Take on the Chiefs’ Current Mindset

As a former player on the Chiefs’ roster for three full seasons, former safety Tyrann Mathieu had the perfect view of what goes on in the team’s locker room.

From the top players such as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, to the coaching staff of Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo, Mathieu is fully aware of how the Chiefs must be gearing up for the new season.

Speaking to Kay Adams on her podcast ‘Up and Adams’, Mathieu described the team’s mindset as intense with seriousness all around following the team’s recent debacle in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“If I could kind of put a finger on it, it’s intense, you know, I think it’s this seriousness, right? I think the coaches and players alike, they have to be able to tap into that mindset in the spring, throughout training camp. You can’t save that type of stuff for middle of the season or when the season starts. So, I think it’s all about mentality. It’s all about attitude.”

Mathieu also pointed out that the loss in the Super Bowl would still weigh heavily on the minds of Mahomes, Kelce, and even the coaching staff, and that the entire team would be motivated to get off to a fast start and carry the momentum throughout the season.

“If I know those guys like I think I know them, they haven’t had a good night of sleep since they lost that game. I think Patrick is extremely motivated. I think Kelsey’s motivated. Then obviously, Coach Reed and Coach Spags, I know those guys, they probably haven’t left the building since they lost that game. I could see those guys starting fast and definitely playing with an edge to really begin and kind of take them throughout the season.”

Over the past six years, the Chiefs have made it to the Super Bowl five times, winning three Lombardi Trophies. While some do consider this a dynastic run, this team, led from the front by Mahomes, Kelce, and coach Reid, is all about building a legacy, and that can only be achieved with greatness year in and year out.
