Can the Chargers challenge the Chiefs for the AFC West crown this year?
The Los Angeles Chargers will be beginning their second year under head coach Jim Harbaugh. If last season was anything to go by, the Chargers could be contenders to go deeper in the playoffs in the 2025-26 NFL season.
Harbaugh managed to take a team that finished 5-12 in 2023 to an 11-6 record last year, and that too without a proper offseason. An offense that focuses more on the run has added former Steeler Najee Harris to their backfield as well as running back Omarion Hampton from the draft.

The Los Angeles Chargers will be playing 4 preseason games this year, that is because their first game will be the Hall of Fame game against the Detroit Lions. Then, the Chargers will play their standard set of three preseason games against the Saints, Rams, and 49ers.

The Chargers had a total of 9 picks in the 2025 NFL draft. Despite having a balanced draft on both sides of the ball, it was evident that the main focus was on the offense, and more so on pass-catching depth. Here are some of the rookies to keep a watch on during preseason.
The Chargers selected Omarion Hampton with their first-round pick with the intent of improving their rushing game. Even though they signed Najee Harris on a one-year deal, Hampton will be the future. If he performs well from the get-go, he may see a high number of snaps coming his way.
Omarion Hampton is a RB prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored an unofficial 9.78 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 43 out of 1909 RB from 1987 to 2025.

Selected in the fifth round, Gadsden is a welcome addition to the Chargers’ tight end room. Although he will be behind Will Dissly and Tyler Conklin in the pecking order, Gadsden should provide them with a more viable receiving option, especially since he has played the receiver position before converting to tight end.
The Chargers’ receiving room was one of its weaknesses last season. That should allow Harris, their second-round pick, plenty of opportunities to show his worth.
One of the major concerns for the Chargers last season was their interior offensive line. While both tackle positions were set and played well, the interior line’s weakness was exposed, which limited the effectiveness of the Chargers’ rushing game.

Moreover, the running game was also not up to the standard expected from a Harbaugh-led offense. Their primary running backs were J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. Dobbins missed multiple games, and Edwards couldn’t be used to carry the bulk load of the offense.
While the Chargers had one of the better quarterbacks in the league in Justin Herbert, they didn’t have many options at receiver who could impact the game outside of rookie Ladd McConkey. Quentin Johnston had a much better second year, but he, too, had his fair share of struggles along the way.
As is the standard norm amongst NFL teams, the starters generally do not play in all the preseason games. That is mainly to avoid any significant injuries from taking place even before the start of the regular season.
Moreover, teams also use these games to evaluate their rookies, fringe players on the roster, and to get a general overview of how well the implemented systems are functioning against other teams.
Having said that, some of the starters may get to see some action in a couple of games to ensure there the offseason rust is not a factor heading into the new season.
