For the second year in a row, the Detroit Lions were unable to make it to the Super Bowl despite the heavy expectations placed on them. They earned the home-field advantage and a first-round bye after their win over division rivals Minnesota Vikings, in the last game of the season.

Yet, they fell to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round in the most unexpected fashion. The loss of both coordinators could be a major blow for the franchise’s hopes this year, but can Dan Campbell and his staff steer the ship and bring glory to Detroit in 2026?

Detroit Lions 2025 Preseason Schedule

The Detroit Lions are scheduled to play in four preseason games this year. The first game will be the Hall of Fame game against the Los Angeles Chargers. They will then play three more preseason games against the Falcons, Dolphins, and Texans.

Lions Rookies To Watch in 2025 NFL Preseason

Detroit had a total of 7 selections in the 2025 NFL draft. As expected, they invested in bolstering their interior offensive line by drafting two guards from their first four picks. However, their first-round selection was defensive tackle Tyleik Williams.

Tate Ratledge – Guard

Second-round pick for the Lions in this year’s draft class, Tate Ratledge, is one to keep an eye on for sure. The Lions were inconsistent with their interior O-line play in the 2024 season, and Ratledge may have to step up on an immediate basis.

Ahmed Hassanein – Defensive End

The Lions desperately needed an edge rusher on the opposite side of Aidan Hutchinson. In the sixth round, they drafted Ahmed Hassanein, who could have a key role to play on the defense for the Lions this year.

Tyleik Williams – Defensive Tackle

Tyliek Williams was the Lions’ first-round selection, and even though he may not be an instant starter at the position, it is his versatility that could come in handy for Detroit as the season progresses.

What Aspects Do the Detroit Lions Need To Work on This Season?

Last season, the offensive line was one of the key areas where the Lions struggled, especially in the playoffs. They were not consistent enough and had too many up-and-down games. In the postseason, their weaknesses were exposed, and the O-line wasn’t able to protect QB Jared Goff.

One of the other major concerns for the Lions heading into the new season is their pass interference penalties on defense. Last season, Detroit ranked 31st in the league in pass interference penalties, and that problem needs to be assessed immediately. Cornerback Terrion Arnold was at the receiving end of many of those penalties, but he did improve as the season went on.

Another area where the Lions could look to get better this year is their pass rush and defense overall. While they were pretty decent against the run, the pass defense struggled quite a bit.

Will the Lions Starters Play in the Preseason Games?

Generally speaking, starters do not feature in most of the preseason games. These games are meant for coaches to get an idea about where the team is heading and which systems are working.

Also, rookies and fringe players on the roster use these games to show what they can offer and make a case for themselves ahead of the regular season. The starters may get some amount of game time, but it will be in limited capacity for sure.
