Carlos Prates biggest fan asks him for a decisive victory against Ian Garry!
Every fighter needs someone in their corner. Someone who believes in them no matter what. For UFC welterweight Carlos Prates, that person is his mother. She has been there from day one, watched him throw his first punch. She supported his dream when others doubted and celebrated his early victories in small Brazilian gyms. Now her son fights on the world’s biggest stage. And even as he prepares for the biggest opportunity of his career, mom still has something to say about it.
The Fighting Nerds gym in Brazil has become a factory for UFC talent. Caio Borralho has been climbing the middleweight ranks. Jean Silva has turned heads at featherweight. But perhaps their most exciting product is Carlos Prates. The Brazilian knockout artist has been perfect in the UFC so far. Now he has been thrust into his first main event against Ian Machado Garry at UFC Kansas City.
As fight week arrived, Carlos Prates received an unexpected call during the filming of ESPN’s UFC Journey series. His mother was on the line with some straight-to-the-point advice.
“Don’t give the opponent a chance to play too much. Do you understand? And finish the war quickly. The way mommy likes it, with a perfect finishing touch!”

Her advice fits perfectly with Carlos Prates’ fighting style. The Brazilian isn’t known for dragging fights into the later rounds. He’s a first/second round terminator. Prates has shown explosive power that made him an instant fan favorite. His mother probably appreciates those quick finishes too, less time to worry about her son getting hurt. Every extra minute in a fight is another minute for a mother to hold her breath.
This main event didn’t happen by accident. Prates was originally scheduled to face Geoff Neal at UFC 314 earlier this month. When Neal pulled out with an injury, the UFC pivoted quickly. They paired Prates with Ian Machado Garry and promoted them to the main event in Kansas City. It didn’t take long for things to get personal between these two welterweight prospects.
Garry fired the first shot by claiming Prates was “a quitter.” Not one to take the insult lying down, Prates fired back at the Irishman, calling him a “fake fighter” and criticizing his inability to finish Neil Magny at UFC 292 despite Magny being badly hurt.
Carlos Prates responds to Ian Garry calling him a 'quitter':

"I've been in the company for a year, two main events, four bonuses, four knockouts. I think this kid has been in the UFC for about four years, he's never had a main event.
He won one bonus I think in his life. A… pic.twitter.com/MX1oToVYnB
The tension between these two has only added to the intrigue. With both men on the verge of title contention, there’s more than pride on the line. The winner could find themselves just one more victory away from challenging the UFC 315 winner for the welterweight crown.
