Eredivisie Shock: Francesco Farioli’s Ajax on Verge of 2024/25 Title Collapse

Farioli’s Ajax Crisis: Eredivisie Bottle-Job in the Making

Things were looking back on track for the Ajax side in the Eredivise 2024/25 after falling to fifth place last season. With the club led by Francesco Farioli, who took over in 2024, Ajax had a possible nine-point lead over PSV around early April. However, in a shocking turn of events, Ajax have bottled their lead following their 2-2 away draw against Groningen on Wednesday.

Ajax now trails PSV by a point on the Eredivisie table with 33 matches played. Taking it to the last match day of the league, the Dutch giants don’t hold the fate of Eredivisie 2024/25 in their hands. Leading the table for most of the year, the dropped points towards the end are proving to be more than they appeared.

Why Ajax’s Title Hopes Hace Crumbled: Farioli’s Collapse Explained

Ajax has picked up two points from their past four games, allowing PSV to catch up on the massive nine-point lead. Starting with a 4-0 loss to Utrecht in April, Farioli’s side has gone without winning a single game since then.

Losing to NEC and Utrecht, Ajax also failed to pick the crucial three points from the bottom half side FC Groningen. Below is the collapse of Ajax since April 20, as only one game remains in the Eredivisie 2024/25 season:

DateOpponentResult
April 20, 2025UtrechtLoss (4-0)
May 4, 2025Sparta RotterdamDraw (1-1)
May 11, 2025NEC NijmegenLoss (0-3)
May 14, 2025FC GroningenDraw (2-2)

Ajax will face Twente in the final match week of the 2024/25 season. Given that winning the game isn’t going to be enough for Farioli, they will have one eye on PSV to slip in their game against Sparta. However, with only one game lost in the past 10 and being on a six-game winning streak, PSV is unlikely to slip at this stage.

Once the regular title lifters, Ajax, have missed the silverware of the Netherlands since 2021/22. Moreover, with some of their worst finishes in history in the previous few campaigns, this slip-up will hurt more than ever if PSV goes on to win the Eredivisie 2024/25 title.

This alarming run of form, with only two points from a possible twelve, has severely undermined their title aspirations. Ajax risks joining the infamous list of football’s biggest bottle-jobs, with their season likely to be remembered for slipped potential rather than silverware.
