Real Madrid staged a late comeback to keep their faint La Liga title aspirations alive with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night. Trailing for much of the match, Los Blancos found their rhythm in the second half. Crucial goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jacobo Ramon helped the home side turn the tide around and secure all three points.

The clash with Mallorca marked Ancelotti’s penultimate appearance as Real Madrid manager at the Santiago Bernabeu. The veteran manager will then prepare to transition into his new role as Brazil’s national team coach at the end of the season. Reflecting on the occasion, Ancelotti was visibly emotional. He said,

We Are Still in the Fight: Ancelotti

The win trims the gap between second-placed Real Madrid and league leaders Barcelona to four points, although the Catalan side could still clinch the title with a victory against Espanyol on Thursday. Despite that, Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti was defiant after the match and believed his team are still in the race for the title. The Italian manager said,

“We do not give up despite having 12 injured, something that is very rare… It has been resolved with a good attitude from the collective. I’ve never seen a team shoot 40 times on goal like we did today. We have covered so many casualties with an extraordinary effort. If we had done it in more games, the season would have been better.”

“We believe in doing our thing, in winning what is left and seeing what happens. They have to lose, but anything can happen. We are still in the fight.”

Barcelona will have the chance to seal the La Liga crown when they face Espanyol, knowing a win would render Real Madrid’s victory irrelevant in the title race. Notably, Barcelona need only two points from their final three games to secure the title.
