Ekaterina Alexandrova vs. Maria Sakkari Head-to-Head, Preview, Prediction, and Betting Odds for WTA Bad Homburg Open 2025 Round of 16

Rudra Dubey

Alexandrova and Sakkari set for a contrasting second-round battle on the grass of Bad Homburg.

Eighth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova will face wild card Maria Sakkari in the second round of the Bad Homburg Open. The Russian opened her campaign with a dominant win over Belinda Bencic, dishing out a breadstick in the first set. Sakkari, meanwhile, pulled off a solid win over Yulia Putintseva, sealing the match in straight sets with a second-set tiebreak.

While the 29-year-old Greek has struggled to find rhythm this season, Alexandrova, though not entirely consistent, has shown flashes of top-tier form, including multiple semifinal runs. With contrasting styles and the unpredictability of grass-court tennis, this clash sets up an interesting battle.

Ekaterina Alexandrova vs. Maria Sakkari Preview

Alexandrova has had a start-stop season. After a second-round exit at the Australian Open, she rebounded with a title in Linz, beating Dayana Yastremska in three sets. She also made semifinal runs in Doha, Charleston, Stuttgart, and most recently at the Libema Open.

Withdrawals in Abu Dhabi and Rome due to injury disrupted her momentum, but she hit a career milestone by reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros, falling to eventual champion Coco Gauff. Across 36 matches, she’s served 157 aces, won 68.2% on first serve, won 46.4% of return points, and converted 43.7% of break points.

Sakkari, by contrast, has struggled to find traction in 2025. She hasn’t gone beyond the Round of 16 at any event, with early exits being the norm. Her best result came in Linz, where she reached the quarterfinals but was routed by Dayana Yastremska, who handed her a bagel in a straight-sets loss. In 27 matches, she’s hit 60 aces, winning 62.8% of first-serve points and 42.9% on return, and converting 43.1% of break chances.

Ekaterina Alexandrova vs. Maria Sakkari Head-to-Head Record

Maria Sakkari leads the head-to-head against Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1. A rivalry that has been thoroughly one-sided. Even Alexandrova’s lone win comes with an asterisk, as it was the result of a mid-match retirement by Sakkari due to dizziness during the 2021 Kremlin Cup semifinals.

Their record stretches back to 2015, when Sakkari claimed their first meeting in straight sets in Sobota. Since then, the Greek has dropped just one set, in the 2016 Szeged quarterfinals, where Alexandrova managed to force a tiebreak before eventually falling. Their most recent encounter came in 2023 in Doha, ending with yet another routine win for Sakkari in straight sets.

Ekaterina Alexandrova vs. Maria Sakkari Prediction

Alexandrova comes in with far more momentum, titles, semifinal runs, and a career-best Slam result, while Sakkari holds a commanding 6-1 lead in their head-to-head, suggesting she matches up well tactically. However, form matters, as Alexandrova has been sharper so far, and Sakkari’s struggles may outweigh past dominance.
