Drama in Liverpool vs Bournemouth First Half: VAR Storm, Debut Goal and More

Liverpool begin their Premier League title defense in dramatic fashion on Friday night at Anfield. VAR controversy, a debut goal for Hugo Ekitike, and even broadcasting issues created a huge drama already in the frantic first half against Bournemouth.

The evening started with a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota before kick-off. However, within 14 minutes, attention shifted to the officials. Cherries defender Marcos Senesi escaped without punishment after what many fans and pundits called “the most blatant handball” they had seen.

Liverpool broke quickly from a Bournemouth corner. Mo Salah volleyed a precise through ball towards Ekitike. The French striker looked set to race clear when Senesi, attempting to control with his knee, appeared to deliberately use his arm to stop the ball. Referee Anthony Taylor waved play on.

He then consulted with VAR and the incident was deemed accidental. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher disagreed, saying on commentary: “The Bournemouth defender handled the ball. That’s handball. He knows exactly what he’s doing with his hand. It’s just a reaction as a defender, but that’s handball.”

Hugo Ekitike Delivers on Debut

The controversy didn’t deter Ekitike. Making his league debut, the summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt opened the scoring on 40 minutes. Taking advantage of poor Bournemouth defending, he calmly slotted home after collecting a deflection in the box. The Frenchman marked the moment with a touching gesture.

He held up the number 20 in tribute to Jota. Ekitike was one of four debutants in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI. Florian Wirtz made his bow after a record move from Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong also featured. Kerkez, notably, was facing his former club.

Fans Frustrated by Broadcast Issues

As if the drama on the pitch wasn’t enough, many fans watching from home faced their own frustrations. Virgin Media customers reported pixelation and broadcast interruptions during the first half. Some even complained that they missed Ekitike’s goal entirely. The company acknowledged the fault on social media.

They apologised and promised to resolve the problem “as soon as possible”. By half-time, Liverpool led 1-0. However, fans couldn’t forget the officiating blunder, labelling VAR a ‘laughing stock’ and pundits calling for consistency. The opening match of the season has already reignited officiating issues in the Premier League.
