Rivalry Renewed: Yastremska vs. Potapova in Rome Showdown
Dayana Yastremska is set to face Anastasia Potapova in the first round of the 2025 WTA Italian Open, with the winner earning a clash against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Yastremska and Potapova have had a bag of mixed results in 2025. Yastremska, currently ranked No. 45, opened with a loss to Potapova in Brisbane but showed signs of life in Linz, beating Maria Sakkari and Clara Tauson before falling to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the final. Since then, she is struggling to find footing, with her latest exit coming in Madrid Open’s second round against Coco Gauff.
Potapova, world No. 34, has also had her moments, most notably winning the Winner’s Open after a gutsy three-set win over Lucia Bronzetti. But consistency’s been a struggle for her too. Her latest showing was a straight-set loss to Marta Kostyuk in Madrid’s Round of 16. Both come into Rome looking to steady the ship and get a big-name clash with Aryna Sabalenka next.

Anastasia wins her first title since 2023.
Only one set dropped all week.
She’s not talked about enough, but she has one of the best backhands in the world… & she used it this week.

Dayana Yastremska holds a 2-1 lead in her head-to-head against Anastasia Potapova. Their rivalry began at the 2018 Rome final, where Yastremska delivered a commanding straight-sets win. Fast forward to 2025, and the two have already met twice, first in Brisbane, where Potapova struck back with a hard-fought straight-sets victory to level their record.
But Yastremska responded in style at Dubai, cruising past Potapova in straight sets to reclaim the edge. As they head into their third clash of the season at the Italian Open, Potapova will be eager to even the score, while Yastremska looks to tighten her grip on this emerging rivalry.

With the head-to-head narrowly in Yastremska’s favor (2-1) and both players having split wins this season, this one feels too close to call. Yastremska has shown flashes of high-level shot-making, especially during her Linz Open run, but her inconsistency remains a concern. Potapova, meanwhile, has a WTA title under her belt this year and arguably the more stable baseline game. If Yastremska finds her rhythm early, she could overpower Potapova again, but based on recent form and confidence, the slight advantage may lie with the Russian.
Prediction: Anastasia Potapova in straight sets
Dayana Yastremska: 6/5
Anastasia Potapova: 4/6
