Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez continued his strong pre-season form as he scored in the Reds’ 4-1 win over Athletic Club on Monday. The Uruguay international opened the scoring within five minutes at Anfield. His sharpness and intent was displayed clearly ahead of the new campaign.

However, this impressive performance comes amid growing uncertainty over his long-term future at the club. He arrived at Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 in a deal worth up to £85 million. Since then, Nunez has endured a mixed spell at Liverpool. Last season, he made 47 appearances across all competitions.

However, he could manage only seven goals, starting just eight Premier League games under Arne Slot. Liverpool are currently bolstering their forward options this summer by chasing Hugo Ekitike’s signature from Eintracht Frankfurt. Hence, speculations have increased about a possible departure for the 26-year-old striker.

Al Hilal Step Up Pursuit for Darwin Nunez

Saudi giants Al Hilal have emerged as frontrunners in the race for Nunez’s signature. Initially, they targeted Victor Osimhen, Alexander Isak, and Benjamin Sesko. However, the Saudi Pro League club has now shifted focus to the Liverpool man, with internal discussions accelerating since June.

According to renowned journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Al Hilal are already in contact with Nunez’s camp over personal terms. However, no official bid has yet been submitted. Al Hilal are not alone in the race for Nunez’s signature. AC Milan have also registered their intent. However, they may struggle to match the lucrative financial offer Al Hilal could put on the table.

Napoli were also linked earlier this summer before signing Lorenzo Lucca. Meanwhile, Nunez had previously attracted attention from Al Nassr during the January window. Nunez is seen as a tactical fit for Simone Inzaghi’s system at Al Hilal. Now a move to the Middle East is reportedly being seriously considered by intermediaries working on the deal.

Liverpool and Their Transfer Equation

Liverpool is reportedly making a £110 million bid for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak. Albeit it was promptly rejected, it certainly shows their willingness to reshape the attack. A sale of Nunez could help fund further moves. Especially as Slot looks to fine-tune his squad before the season starts.

While Liverpool haven’t received any formal offers yet, the club is believed to be open to negotiations for the right price. As things stand, Nunez remains a Liverpool player, scoring goals and leading the line in pre-season. However, with the transfer window still open and Al Hilal circling, his future could take a dramatic turn in the weeks ahead.
