Al Hilal Step Up £61m Darwin Núñez Pursuit as Liverpool Prepare for Potential Exit

Ritam Dey

Al Hilal have intensified their pursuit of Darwin Núñez, with the Saudi Arabian giants prepared to table a £61 million (€70m) offer for the Liverpool striker, as per multiple reports. The move, driven by new manager Simone Inzaghi, could see Núñez become the latest high-profile star to swap Europe for the Saudi Pro League.

Personal Terms First, Then Formal Bid

While Al Hilal expressed interest in the Uruguay international earlier this summer, they chose to delay formal negotiations until after Liverpool’s Club World Cup campaign. Now, the Saudi side are fully focused on agreeing personal terms with Núñez before submitting a formal bid to the Merseyside club.

Crucially, the financial side of the deal is not expected to pose any issues, especially with Al Nassr having made a similar offer back in January. At the time, Liverpool refused to sanction a mid-season exit, but the Reds are reportedly more open to a sale this summer as they look to reshape their attack.

Núñez Exit Strategy

Núñez, who joined Liverpool in 2022 for a club-record £85 million from Benfica, has struggled to meet expectations despite flashes of brilliance. With 40 goals in 143 appearances, including just five in the Premier League last season, his future has been the subject of increasing speculation — a situation intensified by a now-deleted Instagram post in April where he appeared to criticise his lack of minutes.

Napoli had shown strong interest earlier in the window, but failed to meet Liverpool’s valuation. AC Milan have since contacted the Reds regarding Núñez, while Premier League clubs — including rivals Manchester United — are said to be monitoring the situation closely.

If the deal goes through, Al Hilal will reportedly make current striker Aleksandar Mitrović available, either on loan or through a permanent transfer. The Serbian was informed before the Club World Cup that a new striker was being targeted.

The Reds have already begun reshaping their forward line. Luis Díaz departed for Bayern Munich in a £65.5 million deal earlier this summer, and a potential sale of Núñez would allow Liverpool to recoup another substantial fee, especially for a player who appears ready to move on.

With Núñez currently in training ahead of Liverpool’s pre-season clash against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, his departure might not be imminent — but if Al Hilal can reach an agreement on personal terms, a formal bid and swift deal could follow.

The Saudi club are determined to land a marquee forward, and Darwin Núñez might just be the next headline signing in their ambitious project.
