Can Michelsen continue his impressive start with a win today?
The 2025 Halle Open continues today with live action from the OWL Arena. The first singles of the day will see the number 3 seed, Daniil Medvedev, go up against Alex Michelsen in their quarterfinal matchup. The winner of this match proceeds to the semifinals, where they will play either Alexander Zverev or Flavio Cobolli.
With the number one seed and current best player on the tour, Jannik Sinner, losing in the pre-quarters, the door is open for others to take advantage of the situation.
Russian number 3 seed, Daniil Medvedev, will be looking to extend his run here as preparation for Wimbledon, coming up at the end of the month. He has eased past his first two opponents with straight set victories.
Medvedev tends to do well on grass, where he currently holds a 47-23 career record with 1 title to his name. This year, he has won an incredible 96% of his service games and has won 88% of his first serve points on this surface. However, the break point conversion is a lowly 17%, as is his 9% return games won. Of course, the sample size on grass is quite low to read too much into.

As for Michelsen, the 20-year-old American is an upcoming player still looking to hit his stride at the top level. Michelesen has a 10-8 career record on grass, but he will enter today’s match with immense confidence, having defeated the fifth seed, Francisco Cerundolo, and Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas in the previous two rounds.
Medvedev and Michelsen have only met once on tour before, but even that match lasted just 2 games as the American was forced to retire after suffering from illness. The pair met earlier this year at Indian Wells, and today’s match will be their second in the head-to-head and first on grass.

Over the past couple of seasons, Medvedev hasn’t looked as sharp as earlier, and that has also resulted in his drop in rankings. However, grass has given him some good results. He has made consecutive semifinal runs at Wimbledon in 2023 and 2024.
Michelsen, though, hasn’t yet risen to a level where he can consistently challenge the big boys of the game. His two wins at Halle have been incredible, but sustaining that momentum could prove to be a challenge against the better player overall.
