The UFC 321 main event ended in absolute disaster when Ciryl Gane accidentally poked Tom Aspinall’s eye.

The heavyweight title fight was declared a no contest at just 4:35 of round one. Aspinall retained his championship by default, but the ending left everyone feeling completely unsatisfied. He expressed frustration about the unfortunate ending while confirming an immediate rematch between the fighters. He praised Gane’s performance. But then White dropped a controversial statement that raised eyebrows throughout the MMA community instantly.

“I think that after the Jones fight, a lot of people wrote Ciryl Gane off, he looked damn good tonight… It was good, it looked like we were in for a few rounds and it was going to be a good fight. He had Tom bloodied up and Tom didn’t want to continue.”

That framing suggested White thinks that Aspinall quit rather than legitimately couldn’t continue due to the eye injury. He essentially insinuated the eye poke gave Aspinall a convenient way to check out. The implication is devastating for a champion’s reputation in a sport built on toughness. Aspinall was getting bloodied by Gane’s jab in the opening round before the accident occurred. The champion looked uncomfortable with the Frenchman’s reach and sharp striking early. He was heading back to his corner for the first time since his knockout loss years ago.

Whether that’s actually true or just promotional story-building remains debatable. The eye poke was clearly accidental and Aspinall’s injury appeared legitimate based on immediate reactions. But White chose his words very deliberately when framing the rematch during that press conference.This could have consequences down the line for the champion.
