Dan Orlovsky’s Shocking Doncic-AD Trade Comparison For The NFL

Recently, the NBA World was sent into a frenzy when a shocking trade took place between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks. In a move that came out of nowhere, the Mavericks sent their perennial All-Star Luka Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for LA’s powerhouse center Anthony Davis. 

Other pieces were also added to this trade, including Markieff Morris and Maxi Kleber, who went to the Lakers, while the Mavericks received Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick. Additionally, a third team, the Utah Jazz, was also involved in the trade. They received the Lakers’ 2023 first-round point guard selection, Jalen Hood-Schifino, along with a second-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which LA had received from the Clippers and Dallas’ second-round pick.

While there were multiple pieces involved in this trade, none made more headlines than the fact that Dallas decided to move on from their current face of the franchise, point guard Luka Doncic in exchange for a 31-year-old Anthony Davis. Doncic, who is just 25 years old and has plenty of years left in his prime. Having just helped the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals the previous season, Dallas was expected to continue building their team around the young Slovenian. 

Based on this surprising event, ESPN’s analyst for the NFL, Dan Orlovsky came up with his own unique trade possibility in line with what we just witnessed in the NBA.

Dan Orlovsky shares his take including Dak Prescott and Josh Allen

ESPN analyst, Orlovsky, compared the Buffalo Bills giving up on Josh Allen and trading him to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for Dak Prescott. Orlovsky then went on to explain the parallels between the two trades as to why he thought it could be the perfect comparison. 

According to Orlovsky, the Bills may be feeling frustrated to have reached the postseason on a regular basis but can’t see their franchise quarterback Josh Allen leading them any further. It would be as if Buffalo was to say to Allen “Hey, you’re really good, but you’ll never get it done for us” and then ship him off to Dallas. 

As for his take on the Cowboys, Orlovsky felt that Dallas would be thinking along the lines that “Dak Prescott, really good, has reached really high levels, but we want a better player type of thing”. 

Although this was Orlovsky’s view on the like-for-like trade comparison between the two big leagues in American sports, there are several other factors as to why the trade between Doncic and AD took place. There could be certain off-the-field moments as well that facilitated this trade and thus this opinion may not be to everyone’s liking.

Have there been any such shocking trades in the NFL?

Trades are a big part of team sports and every now and then one comes along that surprises the fans, the media, and all that are involved. The NFL, though, is a league where most teams are looking for draft capital and as a result, the league generally does not deal with star player swaps.

Several times key star players have been dealt away to other teams but the return is mostly in the form of future draft picks and may include some roster players but ones who have yet to prove their worth.
