However, critics questioned whether celebrity status alone qualifies someone for the presidency. Getting on Ireland’s presidential ballot isn’t simple. McGregor faces significant hurdles in securing the required nominations from either 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local authorities. Despite claiming support from various councils and political figures, no official nominations have been recorded yet. The fighter launched an online petition in August calling for changes to these nomination requirements, arguing they prevent ordinary citizens from running for office.

McGregor’s political ambitions come at a complicated time in his personal life. Legal troubles continue to shadow the former champion, including a court ruling that found him liable for assaulting a woman in 2018. He lost his appeal earlier this year, adding another layer of controversy to his presidential bid. These issues could complicate his political aspirations, as voters weigh his achievements against his legal problems.
