Coco Gauff vs. Naomi Osaka Head-to-Head, Preview, Prediction, and Betting Odds for US Open 2025 Round of 16

Clash of Champions as Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka Renew Rivalry in US Open Fourth Round.

Third seed Coco Gauff is set for a blockbuster fourth-round clash with 23rd seed Naomi Osaka at the US Open 2025. Both players arrive as former champions, with Gauff lifting the trophy in 2023, while Osaka claimed her two New York crowns in 2018 and 2020. Osaka has looked composed through the first week, easing past Greet Minnen and Hailey Baptiste before dropping her lone set of the tournament in a three-set win over 15th seed Daria Kasatkina. Gauff’s path has been strikingly similar. She opened with a testing three-set battle against Ajla Tomljanovic, then raised her level to dismiss Donna Vekic and 28th seed Magdalena Frech without much resistance.

For Gauff, the build-up to New York has been uneven. She steadied her form with a quarterfinal run in Cincinnati after early losses at Wimbledon, Berlin, and Montreal. Her best work came on clay, where she reached finals in Roland Garros, Madrid, and Rome, and captured her second Grand Slam by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in Paris. Across 48 matches this year, she has struck 138 aces, converted 54.9% of break points, and won nearly 70% of first-serve points.

Osaka, a four-time Slam champion, has been rebuilding momentum. She reached the Auckland final in January, lifted her first title since 2019 in Saint-Malo, and recently made the Cincinnati final, falling to Victoria Mboko. In 35 matches, she has recorded 226 aces, winning 73.5% of first-serve points with a 44.7% break conversion rate.

Coco Gauff vs. Naomi Osaka Head-to-Head Record

Coco Gauff holds a 3-2 edge in her rivalry with Naomi Osaka. Their story began at the 2019 US Open, where Osaka, then one of the WTA’s leading forces, dismantled a teenage Gauff in straight sets. At the time, Gauff had just turned professional the year before and was still finding her footing. The tables turned at the 2020 Australian Open, with Gauff notching a statement straight-sets win to announce her arrival. Osaka responded in 2021 in Cincinnati, rallying for a three-set victory to regain the series lead. But the dynamic shifted soon after.

By 2022, Osaka had entered a turbulent stretch marked by inconsistency, while Gauff was rapidly ascending the rankings. The American won in straight sets, and by 2023 she had cemented herself as a Grand Slam champion in New York. Their latest meeting came in Beijing in 2024, where Gauff advanced after Osaka was forced to retire in the deciding set due to a back injury.

Though Gauff officially leads the rivalry, the narrative reflects two careers moving in opposite directions. Osaka was once the benchmark, is now searching for form, and Gauff is the new standard-bearer for the WTA’s next era.

But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
