Chris Eubank Jr Fined Over Social Media Misuse Following Sauna Controversy Ahead of Conor Benn Fight

British Boxing Board penalizes Eubank Jr for promoting unsafe weight cutting practices ahead of high profile showdown with Conor Benn!

Boxers push their bodies to the absolute limit. The grueling process of cutting weight before a fight can be brutal and dangerous. They often resort to extreme measures to shed those final pounds, from sitting in scalding hot baths to sweating it out in saunas. But boxing commissions have strict rules about how fighters can make weight, and for good reason. The British Boxing Board of Control takes these regulations seriously, especially when it comes to fighter safety. Chris Eubank Jr learned this lesson the hard way after his April showdown with Conor Benn.

The 35 year old boxer thought he was just sharing his weight cutting journey with fans on social media. Instead, he ended up in hot water with the boxing authorities!

Chris Eubank Jr.’s Social Media Slip Up That Cost Big

The whole mess started when Eubank posted videos that seemed to show him using a sauna to make weight. While using a sauna isn’t technically banned by written rules, the board strongly advises against it as a way to rapidly lose weight. The British Boxing Board of Control hit Eubank Jr. with a £10,000 fine for what they called “misuse of social media.”

Eubank’s mistake wasn’t necessarily what he did in the sauna, but rather what he showed the world. The boxing board called him to a hearing at the Southern Area Council after he posted several videos of his weight cutting process. These videos implied he was using a sauna to shed those crucial final pounds before his fight with Benn.

The hearing took place on July 1st, and Eubank had to explain himself to the boxing authorities. Interestingly, the board’s investigation found that he wasn’t actually guilty of using a sauna on the day of the weigh in. However, they still found him guilty of improper use of social media. The board’s statement was pretty brief about what evidence they heard. They simply stated that Eubank Jr. had breached Regulation 25 for misuse of social media.

What makes this situation even more frustrating for Eubank is that he actually didn’t made weight on fight day. He missed the official weigh in by a tiny margin, coming in at 160.05 pounds when he needed to be at 160 pounds exactly. That small overage cost him a massive £375,000 fine, which he handed over to Benn. But when it came to the rehydration clause on fight day, he was well under the limit. The board also slapped him with a severe reprimand for being late to the official weigh in ceremony.
