Chelsea Agree £30M Deal To Sign Ipswich Striker Liam Delap

Abhinav Goel

Delap has been in high demand with Manchester United, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest all expressing serious interest in recent weeks.

Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap after activating the £30 million release clause in his contract. The move marks a significant moment for both Delap and Chelsea as the striker prepares to make a step back into top-tier European football with Chelsea aiming for long-term success.

Notably, Delap joined Ipswich Town from Manchester City last summer in a deal worth up to £20 million. The 22-year-old impressed in his debut Premier League campaign with 12 goals in 32 starts. Despite Delap’s contributions, Ipswich were unable to avoid relegation and finished 19th in the table, which automatically triggered his exit clause.

The striker has been in high demand with Manchester United, Everton, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest all expressing serious interest in recent weeks. However, Delap is said to have made Chelsea his preferred destination. Sources close to the deal revealead that Delap feels that Stamford Bridge offers the ideal platform for his continued development. Though negotiations on personal terms are still ongoing, there is growing confidence that Delap will officially become a Chelsea player in the coming days.

Chelsea’s recent success in the UEFA Conference League and qualification for next season’s Champions League were instrumental in the deal. Meanwhile, other key factors included Chelsea’s attractive style of play, the presence of a young squad and the promise of game time.

Delap was in attendance during Chelsea’s emphatic 4-1 Conference League final win over Real Betis in Wroclaw. Witnessing the squad’s second-half performance is said to have left a lasting impression on him, which reaffirmed his desire to join Enzo Maresca’s team. Notably, the striker previously played with Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia during his time at Manchester City, both of whom have flourished since joining the Blues.

Also, Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca and recruitment co-director Joe Shields both worked with Delap during their Manchester City stints. These relationships have reportedly played a key role in Delap’s preference to sign for Chelsea.

Ipswich Eyeing Delap’s Replacement

With Delap’s departure imminent, Ipswich are now exploring a potential loan move for Chelsea striker Marc Guiu. The 18-year-old Spaniard enjoyed a promising breakthrough season, scoring six goals in 14 appearances. Although his campaign was disrupted by a muscular injury that kept him out for most of 2025, he returned to action as a substitute in the Conference League final.

Should the move go through, it would provide Ipswich with a capable young replacement while giving Guiu regular minutes as he continues his development.
