AC Milan Sack Sergio Conceicao After Disappointing Six Months in Charge

The final blow came last weekend with a 2-1 defeat to AS Roma, a result that ended Milan’s European hopes.

AC Milan have officially parted ways with manager Sergio Conceicao just six months into his tenure. The sacking came after a frustrating domestic campaign that ended without European qualification for the first time since 2019. The 50-year-old Portuguese was appointed in December to replace Paulo Fonseca and signed an 18-month deal.

Conceicao arrived with a strong pedigree after a highly successful six-year spell at FC Porto where he won 11 major trophies. However, he was unable to replicate his previous success in Italy, with Milan finishing ninth in Serie A and enduring a disappointing season overall.

A Disappointing Season For AC Milan

Despite an initially promising start, as AC Milan lifted the Italian Super Cup in just his second match in charge, Milan’s form quickly deteriorated. The club’s league campaign was marked by inconsistency and the Rossoneri slipped down the table over the course of the season.

Milan’s Champions League hopes were dashed early when they were eliminated in the playoff round by Dutch side Feyenoord in February. Conceicao’s side failed to recover from that disappointment. Their Coppa Italia final loss to Bologna earlier in May only deepened the sense of frustration around the club.

The final blow came last weekend with a 2-1 defeat to AS Roma, a result that ended Milan’s European hopes. Conceicao, who was sent off in that match, served a touchline ban for the final fixture of the season.

In a statement released on Thursday, AC Milan thanked Conceicao for his work and wished him well for the future. The club wrote,

“The club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism, and dedication in leading the team in recent months. The Rossoneri family bids farewell to the coach who contributed to the conquest of the 50th trophy in Milan’s history, wishing him the best for his future.”

Reports in Italy now indicate that Massimiliano Allegri is the frontrunner to return to the Milan bench. Allegri, who previously managed the Rossoneri from 2010 to 2014, won the Serie A title with the club in 2011 and is currently available after his recent departure from Juventus.

Meanwhile, Milan’s city rivals Inter are preparing to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final this Saturday.
