Carlos Alcaraz has been named the 2025 Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award winner, becoming a two-time recipient after first earning the honor in 2023. The recognition, announced at season’s end, caps a campaign in which the 22-year-old finished as ATP Year-End No. 1, lifted eight titles including Roland Garros and the US Open, and compiled a tour-leading 71-9 record. He was selected for embodying professionalism and integrity, the core criteria for eligibility.

Alcaraz’s Dominance Paired With Integrity

Alcaraz’s professionalism is well reflected throughout the year at several moments. His most-discussed act of fairness came in the Roland Garros fourth round against Ben Shelton. After appearing to strike a clean volley winner, Alcaraz immediately corrected the call when he realized his racquet had slipped from his hand during contact. By rule, the point belonged to Shelton. “I would have felt guilty if I didn’t say anything about it,” he said afterward, as per the ATP. It became one of the defining scenes of the tournament, an inspiration for honesty even under pressure.

During a tense five-set Wimbledon opener, a 15-minute halt followed when a spectator collapsed from the heat. Rather than stepping away, Alcaraz fetched water himself and handed it to a steward to assist the fan. The gesture drew applause from the Centre Court crowd for his sense of responsibility that travels with him from venue to venue.

Even in defeat, he showed the same clarity of character. After losing the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz met his rival at the net with a warm embrace and then applauded as Sinner celebrated with his camp. Their rivalry, already one of the sport’s centerpieces, continues to thrive on mutual respect.

Alcaraz emerged from a nomination field that included Felix Auger-Aliassime, Grigor Dimitrov, and Casper Ruud. This year marked the first time members of the ATP No. 1 Club voted to determine the winner, building on a tradition shaped by Stefan Edberg himself and carried by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal across two decades.

Alcaraz’s season reminded fans that excellence and ethics can coexist, and his second Sportsmanship Award reinforces that his legacy is being shaped on more than the scoreboard.
