Aryna Sabalenka says her upcoming Battle of the Sexes-style exhibition against Nick Kyrgios will not harm women’s tennis, instead insisting it gives her an opportunity to show “women are strong, powerful, and good entertainment.” The match, set for 28 December in Dubai, arrives amid debate over what it represents for the sport and filters into a separate discussion after Sabalenka said in a recent interview that competing against transgender women is “not fair on women.”

Sabalenka said, “It’s not going to be an easy match for Nick,” she said. “I’m going to be there competing and showing women are strong, powerful, and good entertainment. He’s in a lose-lose situation. I’m in a win-win situation.”

Sabalenka Rejects that Match Could Undercut Women’s Sport

Sabalenka, the world No. 1 and four-time major champion, enters the exhibition after another standout season that ended with the US Open title. Some observers argue she has nothing to gain by facing Kyrgios, a 2022 Wimbledon finalist trying to rebuild his career after severe wrist issues and now ranked 672nd. Others fear a loss could reinforce outdated narratives about women’s tennis. Sabalenka rejects both concerns.

Asked if defeat might damage the women’s game, she told BBC Sport, “I don’t agree. I am not putting myself at any risk. We’re there to have fun and bring great tennis. Whoever wins, wins.” She acknowledged the biological gap between the sexes but argued the match is framed around entertainment, not comparison. “It’s so obvious that the man is biologically stronger than the woman, but it’s not about that. This event is only going to help bring women’s tennis to a higher level.”

A Parallel Debate Surrounds the Lead-Up to the Match

The match gained further attention when Sabalenka addressed transgender participation in women’s tennis during an interview with Piers Morgan recently. When asked if she agreed with Martina Navratilova’s view that allowing trans women to compete is “wrong,” Sabalenka offered a firm response. “That’s a tricky question,” she said. “I have nothing to do against them. But I feel like they still got a huge advantage over the women, and I think it’s not fair on women to face basically biological men.”

She expanded on the point, adding, “The women been working their whole life to reach their limit, and then she has to face a man [who is] biologically much stronger. So for me, I don’t agree with this kind of stuff in sport.” Kyrgios, appearing in the same interview, backed her stance, saying, “Yeah, I feel the exact same way.”
