The reigning champion has posted a dominant 18-1 clay court record this year.
Four-time major champion and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz will arrive at the Philippe-Chatrier to face Ben Shelton in the round of 16 of the 2025 Roland Garros. The Spaniard overcame Damir Dzumhur in a four-set thriller to reach the fourth round, while Ben Shelton set a big matchup with Carlos after defeating Matteo Gigante in the third round. The winner of this game will take on either Alexei Popyrin or Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.
Carlos Alcaraz has been tested in the past two matches as he had to go to four sets against Marozsan and Dzumhur to reach the round of 16. The reigning champion has posted a dominant 18-1 clay court record this year, his best season on the surface. His only defeat on clay came in the Barcelona final. Carlos is 10-1 round of 16 Grand Slam matches, including 3-0 at RG. Alcaraz secured the titles in Rotterdam, Monte Carlo, and Rome this season, along with a final in Barcelona. He reached the quarterfinals in Melbourne and Qatar, and had a semifinal run in the Indian Wells. The 22-year-old has a glorious run in the current season and remains hot favourite to lift the trophy.

Ben Shelton gets his biggest matchup of the season ahead of a massive quarterfinal berth. He will make a first second-week appearance at French Open after a straight set victory in the last round. He has played in the quarterfinals at US Open twice and Australian Open once. Shelton is a youngest U.S. player to make the R16 at all four Grand Slams since Sampras in 1992. If he pulls off an upset, we might have an All-American quarterfinal in men’s singles. The American ace has posted a 6-4 record on the clay court and going against the prime Alcaraz would be the toughest assignment for him.
Carlos Alcaraz holds the 2-0 advantage over Ben Shelton in Head-to-Head matchups. The Spaniard beat Shelton in 2023 at the Masters in Canada and then in 2024 at the Laver Cup. It will be their first meeting at clay court.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Laver Cup | Round Robin | Carlos Alcaraz | 6-4, 6-4 |
| 2023 | ATP Masters 1000 Canada | Round of 32 | Tommy Paul | 6-3, 7-6(3) |
| Carlos Alcaraz | Category | Ben Shelton |
| 2 | Ranking | 13 |
| 240-61 | Career W-L | 88-63 |
| 31-5 | YTD W-L | 11-10 |

Carlos Alcaraz is going with a fearless mindset and with a 31-5 record in 2025, the Spaniard is looking to defend his Roland Garros title. He has a dominant form and a great experience on the clay court. Shelton can test Alcaraz with long rallies, but he needs to play harder to make a biggest upset of the tournament. In two meetings, the Spaniard overcame Shelton in straight sets. Alcaraz is clear favourites to win this game.
Prediction: Alcaraz to win in four sets.
