Manchester United’s difficult afternoon at Villa Park took a worrying turn when their captain failed to return for the second half. It instantly shifted the attention away from the scoreline. Bruno Fernandes had looked uncomfortable late in the opening period but battled on until the break. The concern increased after the break.
Man United reappeared with Lisandro Martinez instead of Fernandes introduced in midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte. Fernandes soon followed from the tunnel. He watched on from the bench rather than continuing his role at the heart of the side. Given his reputation for durability, the sight alone was enough to raise alarm bells.

Bruno Fernandes first appeared to feel discomfort around five minutes before half-time. He briefly pulled up during open play. Although he completed the half, his movement was restricted as he walked off the pitch. Then the decision was made not to risk him further. Ruben Amorim spoke about it after the match.
Amorim expressed that he was reluctant to speculate too much on the situation, saying, “I don’t want to talk about matters you can’t control.” He still acknowledged that the early signs were not encouraging. He added, “It’s a soft tissue, I think he’s going to lose some games, I don’t know for sure. He is a guy who is always fit so he might recover quite well.”

The manager later confirmed Fernandes would miss the Boxing Day fixture against Newcastle. It’s an immediate blow during an already congested run of games. Diogo Dalot was even more direct in his assessment of the situation. He later said, “It’s massive. We don’t know how bad it is but for him to come off, we know how tough he is.”
Fernandes’ importance to Man United cannot be overstated. Despite operating deeper at times this season, he remains their primary creative force. He has been contributing goals and assists with remarkable consistency. Prior to this match, there had been only four league games in which Man United scored without his involvement.

His injury also comes at a problematic moment for Amorim. His squad depth is already depleted with the AFCON. Kobbie Mainoo missed the trip with a calf issue, while Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire remain sidelined. Compounding matters further, several players are set to depart for international duty in the coming weeks.
Replacing Fernandes’ influence is as much about leadership as tactics. Lisandro Martinez filled in admirably. However, Amorim has previously described using him in midfield as an emergency option. The debut of 18-year-old Jack Fletcher underlined the lack of experienced alternatives.
