In a tense Bernabeu encounter, the French forward stepped up when it mattered most. And produced a brilliant finish to make history and spark an emotional tribute.

Real Madrid had taken the lead before the break through Jude Bellingham. His perfectly timed header converted a Rodrygo set-piece. Sevilla stayed competitive despite growing pressure. But their task became steeper after Marcao was sent off for a second booking midway through the second half.

Mbappe was celebrating his 27th birthday and endured a frustrating evening in front of goal. However, he finally found his breakthrough from the penalty spot in the 86th minute. He calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way. And ensured the points.

He then instantly brought on a celebration that’s absolutely recognisable to Madrid supporters. He celebrated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s signature celebration. After the match, speaking to Real Madrid TV, Mbappe explained the meaning behind the gesture, saying:

“I tied my idol’s record today, Cristiano Ronaldo, the greatest player in this club’s history. My celebration was dedicated to him, he’s my friend and my hero.” He later expanded on the tribute in comments carried by Reuters, adding, “My idol, the best player in the history of Real Madrid and a reference in world football. It’s an honour for me.”

Kylian Mbappe Impact Beyond the Scoreline

The result followed last weekend’s win against Alaves. It gave Real Madrid consecutive league wins for the first time in months and offered them some breathing room for head coach Xabi Alonso amid ongoing scrutiny. Mbappe’s influence has been undeniable in these wins. Since Alonso’s arrival, the Frenchman has been scoring at an unprecedented rate.

He has consistently provided decisive moments when the team has needed them most. Alonso was quick to highlight that contribution saying, “[Mbappe] always wants to make an impact, which is great for his teammates. It’s a historic achievement; I congratulate him on it and wish him the best for 2026.”

Despite the win, the league picture remains challenging. Barcelona’s win against Villarreal means Real Madrid stay second in La Liga, four points adrift of the leaders as the calendar year closes. With their final fixture of 2025 now complete, attention turns to January and the opportunity to build momentum.
