Bills GM Brandon Beane Draws Parallels With Patriots, Dismisses WR Needs

Bills snub wide receivers to strengthen other areas of the field

The Buffalo Bills recently concluded their draft in which they took one wide receiver by the name of Kaden Prather out of Maryland. Even though they drafted Prather, he was selected in the seventh round with the overall pick number 240, the last selection the Bills made in the draft.

Last season, Buffalo lost their top two receivers in Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, who went to the Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively, resulting in quite a depleted wide receiver room. While the Bills still managed to make it to the AFC Conference Championship game on the back of an MVP season by Josh Allen, they ultimately fell short of the goal.

The Bills’ leading receiver from last season was Khalil Shakir with 821 receiving yards, followed by rookie Keon Coleman, who had 556 yards. Without a standout receiver and in need of more depth, most in the Bills Mafia expected their team to draft a top talent at the receiver position in this year’s draft.

However, that was not the case and the reasons behind why the Bills didn’t draft more receivers early in the draft were given by the team’s GM, Brandon Beane, on the Pat McAfee Show.

Brandon Beane Explains Why the Bills Didn’t Draft a Top Receiver

During his interview on the Pat McAfee Show, when asked about the reasons behind the Bills ignoring their wide receiver room in the draft, Beane decided to draw inspiration from the Patriots teams, which had tremendous success even without top-level talent at receiver.

“Well, I mean, you look at Tom Brady, we were talking about some of these teams that have won Super Bowls. Look at New England how many like great historic receivers did they have in their Super Bowl teams but the Patriots they were good up front, they had a good quarterback, they easily had some type of run game whether it was Cory Dylan, whether it was Faulk even though you know White, a lot of those guys, and so there’s a hundred different ways you can build.”

Beane also went on to say that he understood why people were doubtful of their capabilities at receiver last year, but the team still went on to do well, and as a result, they extended Shakir’s contract and brought in former Charger Joshua Palmer. As per Buffalo’s GM, they are happy with the talent in their receiver room and felt that this year’s draft was not a deep one at the position in question.

“I understood it last year, I understood why people were questioning, hey, do they have enough at receiver. But their takeaway was, why didn’t you take a receiver? That’s the part I didn’t understand, like we just showed that we could score 30 points a game for eight straight games. So why are we talking about receiver? We like our receivers, we feel strong about our receivers, and in our opinion, it wasn’t the deepest receiver class.”

Whether or not this turns out to be the correct move is something we will find out as and when the season gets underway. Nevertheless, this take from Beane is quite a bold one, and if Buffalo struggles on the offensive side of the ball this season, then these remarks may not age too well.
