‘You have full three years before the Rematch’ – Belal Muhammad shuts down Leon Edwards’ title shot claims!

Belal Muhammad is the current welterweight champ of the UFC. He defeated Leone Edwards at UFC 304 to claim the welterweight belt. It has been a long time coming for Muhammad, as he was waiting for a title shot since 2016. To get to where he is today, Belal has fought in a lot of fights in the UFC and against some great competition too. We’re talking about Demian Maia, Gilbert Burns, Leon Edwards to name a few.

Now that Leon Edwards lost his belt against Muhammad, he wants to win it back as soon as possible. He is set to take on Sean Brady in UFC Fight Night, on March 22nd, 2025, and it will be his first non-title fight in more than two years. Like every champ who loses their belt, Edwards similarly wants to take on Muhammad again for the title. However, it is not that simple and he has some fighters ahead of him that he needs to defeat to finally get a title shot.

What did Leon Edwards say on his podcast?

Edwards claimed that he would be granted an immediate title shot if he wins against Sean Brady in UFC Fight night on March 22nd, 2025. He posted a video on his youtube channel “Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards,” where he said “I spoke to the UFC. The winner of me vs. Brady is getting a title shot. It’s a number one contender fight.”

Belal Muhammad responded and immediately shut down Edwards’ claim

Belal Muhammad immediately put a halt to Edwards’ claim and in the “Michael Bisping podcast,” he responded with “Leon, you have full three years before you can even think about our rematch. I have Shavkat (Rakhmonov) in line. There is nothing you can do to skip him.”

If you’re wondering why Muhammad said three years specifically, it’s because Edwards had fought Muhammad before on May of 2021 which was ruled a no contest. A year later, Edwards defeated Kamaru Usman for the welterweight belt and then made Muhammad wait for nearly three years before giving him a title shot. So now Belal wants Edwards to do the same, which is to wait for three-years before he gets a title shot.

Muhammad is not wrong about Shavkat Rakhmonov being ahead of Leon Edwards as Shavkat was originally supposed to fight Belal for the welterweight title at UFC 315 but he will not compete as Shavkat announced that he’s injured. So now, Muhammad is fighting Jack Della Maddalena instead.

The Welterweight champ has no interest in taking on Edwards and has already planned out the fights he wants to take which includes Maddalena and Shavkat Rakhmonov.
