Bayern Munich Smash Club World Cup Records with 10-0 Win Over Auckland City

Moumita Dutta

Bayern Munich delivered a record-breaking performance in their Club World Cup 2025 opener. They opened their campaign thrashing Auckland City 10-0 at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. And they broke two records in their first match of the tournament.

The German giants registered the tournament’s largest-ever margin of win. They also became the first team to score double digits in a single Club World Cup match. Jamal Musiala stole the show after coming off the bench in the 61st minute.

He netted a quick-fire second-half hat-trick in just 29 minutes. He replaced Harry Kane, who started the match but was unable to get on the scoresheet. Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman, and Michael Olise each scored a brace. Meanwhile Sacha Boey also found the net in the first half.

The 10-0 result eclipsed the previous record held by Al Hilal, who defeated Al Jazira 6-1 in 2021. Bayern’s relentless attack saw them lead 6-0 at halftime, and they showed no signs of easing up after the break. They capitalized on the competition’s five-substitute rule to pile on more goals.

A Mismatch for the Ages Between Bayern Munich and Auckland City

This match marked a clear disparity in resources and experience. Auckland City are a part-time side who came into the competition to represent Oceania. They qualified for the tournament and came to the USA to play after winning the OFC Champions League.

Many of their players had to take unpaid leaves to participate in the tournament. Thus includes their goalkeeper Conor Tracey, who works at a veterinary supply warehouse. In contrast, Bayern fielded a squad valued at approximately £770 million.

That is, roughly 700 times more than their opponents’ £1.2 million roster. Auckland City, who have featured in 13 Club World Cups, remains the only non-professional team in this year’s expanded 32-team format. Following this one-sided affair, Auckland City will have two more group games to play.

They will next play against Benfica and Boca Juniors. Bayern, meanwhile, will look ahead to face Boca Juniors on Saturday. Then they will wrap up their group campaign against Benfica on June 24. The result has sparked debate about the competitive balance of the newly expanded Club World Cup.
