While everything was set for a thrilling third-round Roland-Garros clash between Andrey Rublev and Arthur Fils, the Frenchman Arthur Fils was forced to withdraw late Friday night due to a back injury. Fans were eager to see who would break the 1-1 tie in their head-to-head, but the showdown at the French Open will have to wait.

Heartbreak in Paris for France’s Rising Star

Fils announced the news on Instagram, writing, “Hello everyone, it is with great sadness that I am forced to withdraw from this tournament that I love. It’s a difficult but necessary decision after medical advice. Thank you all for your support. I look forward to coming back to RG next year. See you soon.”

In a press conference today, Fils revealed that his withdrawal was due to a stress fracture in his lower back. He stated the expected recovery time is four to six weeks. While not confirmed, this timeline puts his Wimbledon participation, set to begin at the end of June, in serious doubt.

“We decided with the team it was better to stop now,” Fils said. “Because if I’m stopping now, I could stop for only four to six weeks. If I was pushing myself too much, I would probably stop for a couple of months… Had to make a choice.”

Though he emphasized it’s not a major injury at the moment, the team opted for caution. The decision brings a frustrating halt to what was shaping up to be the best Slam run of his young career.

Just When Things Were Clicking

Currently enjoying a breakthrough season with a career-high ranking of No. 14, Fils had yet to capture a title in 2025 but made strong runs, reaching the semifinals in Barcelona and quarterfinals in Hong Kong, Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo. Notably, he was the first player this season to reach the latter three QFs.

In his second-round match, Fils battled through five grueling sets against Jaume Munar, including back-to-back tiebreaks. The match lasted 4 hours and 25 minutes. Afterward, he admitted he wasn’t 100%, saying, “Got some issue with the back, but that’s since I’m young so I’m used to it. And also the cramps. A bit of everything. The mix was not very good.” When asked if he’d be ready for Rublev, he added, “I hope so.”

By nightfall, the answer became clear. Fils was forced to end what had been his best French Open run to date. His exit also left the Roland-Garros draw without a single Frenchman remaining. Now, Andrey Rublev has advanced to the fourth round and will be facing either Jannik Sinner or Jiri Lehecka.
