Arsenal Midfielder Set To Join Brazilian Side Flamengo This Summer

Abhinav Goel

Arsenal are already working to sign a replacement for Jorginho with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi identified as a potential replacement.

Arsenal midfielder Jorginho is on the verge of a summer departure. The Italian is set for a move to Brazilian giants Flamengo with talks between the two parties entering the final stage. The 33-year-old has reportedly signed a three-year pre-contract agreement with the Rio de Janeiro club. The deal will be formalized in June during FIFA’s pre-Club World Cup transfer window.

Flamengo have long been admirers of Jorginho and made their interest known as early as December. With his Arsenal contract expiring at the end of the current season, the Brazilian club stepped up negotiations and are now poised to land the experienced midfielder on a free transfer. Jorginho is expected to sign a deal running until 2028.

Arsenal Already Working on Jorginho’s Replacement

The former Chelsea man joined Arsenal in January 2023 for a reported £12 million fee. Jorginho made 78 appearances for the Gunners, mostly serving as a backup to Thomas Partey and Declan Rice. His time at the Emirates has been recently hampered by a punctured lung sustained during a Premier League clash against Brentford, which has ruled him out of action in recent weeks.

Arsenal are already working to sign a replacement for Jorginho. Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi has reportedly been identified as a potential replacement, with Mikel Arteta eager to reinforce his midfield options ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. Arteta is believed to have personally pushed for the move as he identified Zubimendi as a crucial piece in reshaping Arsenal’s midfield. New sporting director Andrea Berta is also aligned with Arteta’s vision, with the duo believing that the Zubimendi’s addition will significantly elevate Arsenal’s midfield.

Zubimendi has long been admired for his tactical intelligence and ability to dictate the tempo of the game. The 26-year-old has a €60 million ($68m) release clause in his contract and Arsenal are now prepared to trigger it. Arsenal are intent on adding a more progressive profile to their midfield and Zubimendi fits that profile perfectly.

Since making his debut in the 2018/19 season, Martin Zubimendi has established himself as a standout performer for Real Sociedad. With 17 caps for Spain, Zubimendi could prove pivotal for Mikel Arteta’s side should the deal be finalised.
