Antony Moving Back to Real Betis? Manchester United Progress Talks

Antony’s Manchester United chapter appears to be nearing an end. Talks are progressing over a potential return to Real Betis. The Brazilian winger cost United £82m when he signed from Ajax in 2022. He has been on the fringes of Erik ten Hag’s plans.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at the La Liga side. According to multiple reports, an agreement in principle has been reached for Antony to rejoin Betis. Negotiations are centered on an initial loan deal with an option or obligation to buy.

Reportedly, the Red Devils are believed to prefer a permanent move. So far, discussions between both clubs have been described as ‘positive’. Talks are expected to accelerate ahead of the transfer deadline on Monday. Antony himself has made his intentions clear by prioritising a return to Betis over other offers.

He even rejected a lucrative approach from Saudi Arabia. Last week, speaking about the mutual desire for a reunion, Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini said, “We all know that he was very good here, we want him with us, and Antony wants to return no doubt.”

Betis have even left the No. 7 shirt vacant for Antony so far. It’s a symbolic gesture that reflects their confidence in sealing the deal. The winger enjoyed a productive loan stint last season. He scored nine goals in 26 appearances and provided a significant attacking boost to the Spanish side.

Manchester United Costly Investment on Antony Fades

Antony’s time at Old Trafford began with promise. He scored in his first three Premier League games, including against Arsenal and Manchester City. However, he struggled to maintain that impact. He managed only five league goals in nearly 60 appearances.

former United captain Gary Neville made remarks on Antony’s situation earlier this summer, saying, “There is a different tactical awareness, technical ability [in Spain], which is better suited to him.” The Brazilian still has two years left on his contract.

However, the Red Devils are ready to cut their losses and are willing to offload him. As the clock ticks down to deadline day, the deal remains in advanced stages. Both clubs are pushing to finalise terms soon that will end Antony’s underwhelming United stint.
