Anthony Gordon Red Card: What Happened to Newcastle United Winger Against Liverpool?

Newcastle United started the night rough at St. James’ Park against Liverpool. Anthony Gordon saw red in the first half of their Premier League clash on Monday. Gordon was dismissed in the 45th minute after a reckless challenge on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

This turned an already challenging game into an uphill battle. Initially Gordon was shown a yellow card by referee Simon Hooper. The decision was then upgraded to a straight red after a VAR review. The Premier League explained on social media:

“After VAR review, the referee overturned his on-field decision of a yellow card to Anthony Gordon. The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4’s calf. My final decision is a red card to Newcastle United number 10.”

Why Did Anthony Gordon See Red Card

Gordon was deployed as a central striker in the absence of Alexander Isak. He had started the match energetically, creating several chances. He then almost scored with a header from Harvey Barnes’ cross. However, frustration set in as Liverpool began to dominate possession.

Especially after Ryan Gravenberch’s opener from distance gave the visitors the lead and the confidence. In an attempt to inject aggression into Newcastle’s play, Gordon lunged into Van Dijk while pressing high. He caught him on the back of the calf with his studs.

Van Dijk later revealed deep stud marks on his leg where Gordon collided with him. Former players were quick to react. Newcastle legend Alan Shearer wrote on social media: “What a stupid challenge man. It’s a red card all day.” Ex-Arsenal forward Theo Walcott told the BBC:

“It’s a striker’s tackle. He’s still got that fire in the belly and he’s not thinking there at all. Virgil van Dijk wouldn’t go down if he wasn’t hurt. It’s a red card, for me.” Thierry Henry echoed those sentiments on Sky Sports: “At the time it happened, I said it was a red. Why put yourself in this situation?”

What It Means for Newcastle United

The sending-off compounded Newcastle’s woes. Already missing Isak, Gordon’s suspension adds to Eddie Howe’s striker crisis. Even so, the Magpies gave the Reds a worthy fight to end the match on a 2-3 defeat. Gordon now possibly faces a three-match ban, leaving Newcastle scrambling for attacking options at this moment.
